Everyone always says this like there is a day when someone walks up to a musician and says, "You want to sell out?" And they respond with, "Hell yeah! Give me money. I'll do whatever."
In reality, the vast majority of musicians don't make it, and people have to learn to adapt to what the audience wants in order to survive. Some people become very successful at that, but they are "sellouts." Okay.

But like them or not, No Doubt and Gwen Stefani both have laid down a LOT of music that's original or expressive and not tailored for radio play.
Don't begrudge them for getting paid. You can't keep every artist you like in a little box just for you and your enjoyment. They should be rewarded for all those deep tracks and B sides that clutter up your playlist... and they get that reward by signing a big ol contract.
As for Gwen, I'm in my 40s like her... and she is at the top of the celebrity list for me. Woman is downright hypnotic in her appeal.
