LUMBERTON, North Carolina (WTVD) -- Five people, including two children, were killed and four others were seriously injured in a fiery crash involving multiple vehicles on Interstate 95 Tuesday afternoon.

The crash shut down both directions of I-95 for almost 12 hours near Exit 10 in Robeson County - which is just north of the South Carolina border.

Pictures from Chopper 11 HD showed there were at least 3 tractor-trailer trucks and 3 smaller vehicles involved.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol said the driver of a tanker truck failed to slow down for some highway construction around 1 p.m., causing a rear-end chain reaction.

Fuel in the tanker truck caught fire. The flames and spreading gasoline then ignited other vehicles. The main trailer of the tanker did not ignite.

I always get nervous when at a stop or slow-down on the interstate.

I always make it a point to leave multiple car lengths in front of me when I'm coming up to a traffic jam.

I just hope, for the sake of mercy, that they were killed before the fire.

Time to start the autonomous vehicle debate again. This is just awful.

I almost had a big tow truck plow into the back of me a few weeks ago. I was at the end of a dead stop on the interstate. I look back and see this giant truck going about 70 up on me. He had to swerve into the adjacent clear lane with a second to spare to avoid hitting me.

Probably crushed between two 18-wheelers.

Hopefully quick and painless, for their sake.

That little pink sippy cup on the ground in the first pic is brutal.

Thats not going to do shite when an 80,000 pound tractor trailer rig slams into you going 50+ mph because the driver fell asleep or was distracted.

Leaving space like that just causes more problems, especially if you're in traffic/city.

But it will still allow me room to maneuver and limit the chances of me getting sandwiched between another car in the case I do get hit. But you do you and I'll do me.

And I'm primarily talking about when the interstate comes to an abrupt stop, not daily driver traffic so I don't buy your assertion that it causes traffic problems.
