Unless he tried to pass off his findings as those of a licensed engineer, which the article make sit seem he didn't, I really don't see how that fine can possibly stand. But left coast gonna left coast.

You can be fined in Louisiana if you try to pass as an engineer.

I don't know of a state where you can't be. You can also add Canada to that list.

He called himself an engineer. The law is pretty cut in dry on that. Also, most people working in engineering fields know the distinction.

Yea, it can be more subtle than most realize. Even having engineer in your title violates the statute. The Tire Engineers franchise had to go to the Board to get a waiver for their "Tire Engineer" mechanics. Railroads are the only group exempt.

He's not just some schmo masquerading as an engineer, though. He has an EE degree, just isn't licensed in OR. They are pretty proactive about policing who calls themselves an engineer.

He's going to win his suit. He has a degree in electrical engineering and, oh yeah, first amendment, like the very first one.

Uh, there are so many field engineers in construction that aren't licensed engineers. I don't see any of them getting fines.

Same with O&G. Trying to defend this fine is asinine. Unless he was trying to mislead the public or secure work using the title of engineer, they have no leg to stand on. I see nothing in the story to justify the fine.

Tons more Accountants than CPAs. No CPA cries when someone calls themselves an Accountant.

No he won't, if the article is correct. He referred to himself as an engineer in regards to the study he did. Regardless of your degree, you cannot represent yourself or work you have done as an engineer or engineering unless you are licensed with an appropriate board within that state.

I have a degree in mechanical engineering and have an expired license in control systems engineering and am not allowed to refer to myself as an engineer because my license is expired.

This has been adjudicated before and the engineering boards win every single time.

Simply having a degree in engineering does not make you an engineer. You must be registered/licensed.

He has a degree from another country. No license here. The fine will stand. Whether it is ever collected is a different story.
