I know, music board, but damn this is one of the most influential songwriters of the last 50 years.

Gonna sit around and play Cold Dog Soup all day.

Frick RIP

I had a chance to see him at the Heymann Centre a few years ago and blew it.

He hasn't shown a tour date in awhile so I figured he was ill.

I'm liking this Guy Clark tribute thread.

Forgive me all my anger, forgive me all my faults, there's no need to forgive me for thinking what I thought.

Remember to bury him south of that Red River Line.

I've seen him about ten times in small settings -- mostly with Verlon Thompson and Shawn Camp.

First time I saw him, and didn't really know who he was, he walks onto this stage in this small music hall wearing a worn leather vest. The man was tall and looked like he just stepped off an oil rig or construction site with faded wranglers and busted boots. He sits on down on the stool and pulls his handmade guitar from the case, rests it on his knee and shakes a Marlboro Red out of a soft pack he kept in his breast pocket. With the cigarette dangling from his lips, he leans forward to the mic, "This place nonsmoking? Yeah? Well, they ain't kicking me out." Lights it, sticks it onto his guitar and launches into Sis Draper.

He hasn't been the same since Susanna died a few years back. Just biding his time. Giving her time to get supper ready and the tomatoes to get nice and ripe.

among many of his other accomplishments and his own recordings that would be lost on you, there's also this:
quote:

He achieved success as a songwriter with Jerry Jeff Walker's recordings of "L.A. Freeway" and "Desperados Waiting for a Train". Artists such as Johnny Cash, David Allan Coe, Vince Gill, Ricky Skaggs, Steve Wariner, Hayes Carll, Brad Paisley, John Denver, Alan Jackson, Rodney Crowell, The Highwaymen, and Kenny Chesney have recorded Clark's songs.

I like this quote from the above article.

quote:

“People come up and say, ‘What was it like back then?’” he told The Tennessean in 2013. “Well, how would I know? I was (messed) up. I don’t remember. Things changed, and you’ve got to be true to yourself. You’ve got to do the work. But when someone asks what that was like... it was like yesterday.”

Damn, that last line is a song unto itself.

He's the one who made the term "songwriter" meaningful to me.

I was going to quote some of Instant Coffee Blues, but the whole song is perfect.

Everytime someone current is mentioned the old timers post "who" , finally get my turn to be Joe Bleaux.
Don't like country music. Just me.
