At first, I thought it was the former energy company.

Can we at least fix the streets in New Orleans and hire more police officers?

So is this going to the government to disperse or individuals through applications?

Your headline is wrong, BP settled with the US govt. for 18.6 billion. La. gets 8.6 billion of that. That number is broken down further in the article.

I fixed it. I was just reporting as it came out.

No--this is the settlement with the states alone and damages the states sustained. This does not include individual claims.

Let's hope Jindal doesn't spend it all in his final six months in office.

This will be fascinating to follow. Our greedy politicians are foaming at the mouth to get their hands on this money. I predict that over the next 5 -10 years there will be numerous prosecutions dealing with misappropriation of funds, theft and RICO violations from this award. There is no way our elected officials can handle this kind of windfall. If you are a recent law school graduate, my advice would be to head down to the US Attorney's office and put in an application. You will find work.

Jindal is going to build an 8.6 billion dollar monument that protests gay marriage.

$5 billion for natural resource damages (including $368 million in previously allocated early restoration)

LINK

Officials added when finalized, the agreement will mean Louisiana collected about $10 billion in total recovery from the oil disaster. The $6.8 billion for Louisiana is broken down as follows:

quote:

$5 billion for natural resource damages (including $368 million in previously allocated early restoration)

A minimum of about $787 million for Clean Water Act civil penalties distributed through the RESTORE Act (Louisiana’s portion of the RESTORE Council distributed funds has yet to be determined)

$1 billion for state economic damages

How much do you think will go to legal fees? $6-$7 billion???

A ton haha A good friends dad is a big lawyer in NOLA and he worked a bunch on the BP case. About two years ago he tweeted out "Just drove home and parked my new Range Rover in the driveway. Thanks BP" with a picture of it. Like a boss...
