So if BP is paying out 18.7 billion dollars, how much money do they have?

Hopefully, ALL of it will be used for Coastal restoration.

It will, once all of the politicians steer enough toward their cronies.

Who the frick is handling that type of money, no way our state uses it appropriately. Why don't we put the money in the bank and spend what we'd get in interest towards restoring the coast. But there is so much room for corruption here its unbelievable. I doubt Louisiana will gain from this, well we might have more millionaires than we did before

Settlement is being paid out over 16+ years. Frankly, this is a great deal for BP. They had set up a reserve fund for more than this. For us in La., its not a great deal. State has a coastal restoration plan that will cost $50b to implement, and this deal gives us $5b over 16 years. There is no other identified source for funding.

I would imagine that is paid over 20 years or so. There is no way BP can afford to write $18.7 billion in checks all at once.

Federal government should chip in the majority of the rest.

you mean, why doesn't Louisiana do something smart? Because the corruption in this state is almost unrivaled. Our state ranks in the high 40's in just about every category you can think of.

We have slimy politicians and a dumb overall population who kept electing them. This money will be stolen from the people of Louisiana and we'll be here 10 years from now wondering where it all went.

Must not be that big if he needed BP money to afford a Range Rover. That tweet also screams trash new money.

Probably the least effective, least cost-efficient, least accountable, and least sincere activity that the state of Louisiana can possibly engage in.

Bureaucrats, environmental industry hacks and connected contractors will be rolling in money and flaunting insignificant "success stories". They'll squander these billions and demand more.
