Grounding A Generator

I run my generator once a month to make sure it's in working order. Pulled it out yesterday and the grounding wire had broken off. I looked and can't find where it was originally attached. I looked in the manual and found the ground lug, but there's no way that's where it originally was attached. Is it acceptable to just attach it to any bolt that's on the frame? I know some say it's not needed, but I've always had one.

If wire is too short, use self tapping screw to frame and wrap wire around it and then tighten screw.

Use the existing grounding lug or tap a new one

If this is a portable generator and cord connected, then it should not be grounded. Assuming there it is grounded thru the attached cord
