Who you got? Will it be Napoleon's Grand Armee or Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia? Will it be Hitler's legions in World War II or Norman Schwarzkopf's divisions in the Gulf War?

Um, 3 of those 4 ended up losing. Which kind of disqualifies them from GOAT consideration.

Easily the most powerful force gathered together in one place the world has ever seen.

And we didn't even unleash their full potential.

Kind of hard to compare muskets and cannons to Abrams and today's military weapons.

What are your criteria?

The American military by May 1945 was probably the most formidable force the world had seen since the Mongols.

That's why you compare their accomplishments at the height of their power.

Napoleon was master of Europe at the height of his dominance.

Robert E. Lee had staved off multiple attacks against larger armies than his own.

Hitler and his armies, at the height of their power, had conquered more land than any other European power in the history of the continent.

Yes...they all ended up losing in the end but think of what they accomplished before attrition and manpower disadvantages started weighing heavily on their armies.

It's kind of hard to compare forces from such disparate times with the different equipment, training techniques, etc.

But I'd say the Red Army in the latter part of WWII (supplied and supported in part by U.S. and Britain) has to merit a mention.

In two of the three instances, whose fault was that? Don't try to invade and occupy Russia. Especially during the winter.

I can see grading REL on a curve but Napoleon and Hitler <<<<<< the armies that beat them.

For instance...take General Winfield Scott's army during the Mexican-American War. He landed on the coast of Mexico at Vera Cruz. Over the course of a few months, he moved that army inland, fought several large battles against superior manned and equipped forces occupying strong defensive ground, won them all, and captured Mexico City.

Stay on topic, please. The choice isn't narrowed to those four I listed in the OP. Those were just examples.

Take the victorious army I listed above as something that I am looking for.
