James Spann -- a local meteorologist -- wrote this piece today, and I think it really hits home with the "weather sensationalism" we've been seeing in recent years.

quote:

The Houston flooding is a great example. We are being told this is “unprecedented”… Houston is “under water”… and it is due to manmade global warming.

Yes, the flooding in Houston yesterday was severe, and a serious threat to life and property. A genuine weather disaster that has brought on suffering.

But, no, this was not “unprecedented”. Flooding from Tropical Storm Allison in 2001 was more widespread, and flood waters were deeper. There is no comparison. In fact, many circulated this image in recent days, claiming it is “Houston underwater” from the flooding of May 25–26, 2015. The truth is that this image was captured in June 2001 during flooding from Allison.

Flood events in 2009, 2006, 1998, 1994, 1989, 1983, and 1979 brought higher water levels to most of Houston, and there were many very serious flood events before the 1970s.

On the other issue, the entire climate change situation has become politicized, which I hate. Those on the right, and those on the left hang out in “echo chambers”, listening to those with similar world views refusing to believe anything else could be true.

I cannot find the link, but one of the media outlets used pictures from Allison and claimed to be from the Sunday flood.

Very quiet 10 year Anniversary of the destruction of 2005.

Well I guess it is time for Obama to fire up Bush's weather machine and hit NOLA with another Katrina. The federal response will be much better and Obama will use the groundswell of emotion to have himself elected POTUS for life.

I have been doing an unscientific study from Gulf Shores in July for the last 10 years.....if noticeable shrinkage occurs after getting in the water.....the Gulf will have a mild hurricane season.

Negative.

He's engaging in a bit of hyperbole but, in fairness, some quick Googling has shown that with the exception of 2009, 2012 and 2014, an "active" season was (at least initally) predicted.

Now somebody else can do the second half of the puzzle and determine whether 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011 and 2013 qualified as active.
