Your first instinct is to hire a lawyer? Just trust that the company will put your interests ahead of profits. People like you who run to lawyers first thing are why businesses don’t make profits and have to raise prices.
You are also union, which means you are part of a group that gets off grifting the company so I shouldn’t be surprised you would run to a lawyer.
3rd degree burns are just an unfortunate consequence of making a profit for your company and profit should be priority number one.

The safety shower water was not as hot as the oil.
No, it certainly wasn't, but take it from someone who's suffered some nasty steam burns in my lifetime and almost ANY water warmer than moderately warm is going to hurt since nerve endings that have been traumatized are involved.

Cooling towers are to cool heated fluids back to ambient, not chill them

So your company standard doesn't require you to perform a JSA/JHA prior to conducting a new task?
No SOP for what you were asked to do when the task clearly had hazards that should have been mitigated?
Were you the first one in your company to ever perform this task?
How long have you been with the company?
Had you ever done that task before?
Lots of questions.
I hate that you got burned and you likely will receive some form of compensation, but I don't believe there is no SOP for what you did. Unless you work for some mom and pop operation who is about to have their eyes opened to their own shortcomings.

I’d contact a lawyer. I am absolutely not a fan of unions.

So while you were being treated for burns from your workplace injury, your boss asked you to write an SOP for the dangerous job you were injured on because there was no SOP to follow. frick him.
Agreed with this, absolutely over the line

Have you not watched any archeological movie? Never be the first to open anything. That’s where the boobytraps are. You send in an underling to do that nonsense.
He did reference having a boss tell him stuff so he may be the underling that was subject to booby traps
If so, excellent management and the OP should take this as a learning experience and motivation to be the boss

There was one fella who was burned worse than I, and they settled with him, and didn't get fired. Except, down the road he did, not showing up for work. Was passing away his cash at a strip club close to work, similar to She-She's or Onyx on Chef Hwy. Doing blow off of fat arses, shite like that.
Hmmm....how hot of oil are we talking?

Seemed like it at first. Lined up from the "cooling" tower which is always set around 96F.
Cooling tower water is process water that can potentially be contaminated from leaks from equipment. Only potable/drinking water can be used in a safety shower. Because safety showers sit idle when not in use, heat from the sun or other process equipment can cause the water to feel quite hot. I've heard of thermal devices set to open at a certain temperature to introduce a small flow to the line, thus ensuring cooler water on demand.

Ask your frickin union lawyer. That's literally the purpose of being in a union.

Sounds like you didn’t have proper PPE on for the task.

I’d consult a lawyer vs the OT

A good practice is to run water through a safety shower or eyewash prior to a task where they may be needed . The water can get very hot sitting in a pipeband all day stagnant and that draws fresh water through. My first supervisor taught me that and it’s a practice I use to this day .

Oh I’m not saying it didn’t hurt or it wasn’t hot. It’s just a needless exaggeration. He got burned with boiling oil. That’s enough as it is

Also pay attention to where the pipes are run.
We found some that ran next to a boiler and the insulation had fallen off.
The water coming out was scalding arse hot. If you were to turn it on you it would have fricked your world up.
There has since been a massive rerun of all showers in that area to avoid that issue.
Back in 1960 when run it wasn't a thought...

Ask your frickin union lawyer. That's literally the purpose of being in a union.
Substitute “Union” for government in that joke and it works just as well.
The primary role of 2022 Unions is self-preservation. Protection of their rank and file is a nuisance to them.
