I know this comes up from time to time on here, but can anyone comment on Dominican vs Playa del Carmen?

Wife and I are looking to take a long weekend (4 night) in October for our anniversary. We honeymooned in Costa Rica and went to DR a few years ago. She wants to go somewhere different (so we are looking at Cancun area), I really don't care, going back to DR is fine with me, I doubt we will leave the resort much, just want to lay by the pool, etc.

Exaggerate much? I'm on a street corner on fifth street right now and not a machine gun in sight. Sure the cops probably advertise their presence a little leaving their cops lights on 24/7 while patrolling, but there certainly arent many cops wielding machine guns running around either.

On a normal basis you might see one or two. Now if there is an election going on that is a whole different scenario.

Been down here more than in the states since last September, and even had a election during that time. The only guns you routinely see on 5th, are the security guards with shotguns outside the jewelry stores. That's all, now what was annoying about the election is the stores stopping selling alcohol in the convenience stores for the weekend.

To be honest the police presence in Playa IMO is perfect. There's one around if you happened to need one, but there is no intrusion whatsoever.

Go eat dinner at la cueva del chango. I think it's in the 30s street number wise. Then walk south from there along 5th avenue. To me this end is the nicer part of 5th avenue, especially at night. There is also a little taco hut right next door to Phantom divers on 1st avenue. Super fresh and delicious. All the dive people eat there. If your gonna dive in playa then dive with Phantom. Ramon magana is super nice and charlie (Carlos) is too. If you venture towards tulum stop at taco paco in puerto aventuras for fish and shrimp tacos. Akumal is nice and tulum is pretty cool, but was HOT as hell last time we were there. Have fun!! Cancun is stupid. Avoid.

Went out in early April 20 mins south of here, caught a nice 40-50 lb wahoo although I believe we were fortunate to do so, added a few triggers on the way in. I don't think I recommend that group of boats. Honestly if I was coming down here to fish, I would bring some jigs, jigging reels and have a panga take me out just past the reef and jig for aj's and grouper.

Prime time sailfishing is a little north and Jan-April, not to say you might not be able to run into one or two, like we did the wahoo. But I wouldn't count on it.

+1 for Tulum and 5th avenue. If you want to get to Tulum for cheap, find a colectivo going that way (it's like a city bus / van) and it only cost about 20 pesos (about $1.20)

Scuba diving in the caverns is fun if you are certified.

We did 2 dives at Dos Ojos.

Looking at a trip for October.

Would you recommend SCUBA in the caverns vs open water/reef?

Anybody ever stay in Tulum at a private house or anything? I see them on the sites, but I haven't figured out how to get there without having to rent a Jeep and drive like three hours from the airport to get there. Also, I don't want to get shaken down by the MX Policias or grabbed by bandits, killed & then raped.
