Okay, with that opener, you already have half the class looking at their phones or laptops, bored out of their skull.
Honestly, what you say is less important than How you say it.

What is your voice like? Can you project?

Give them something provocative. Something exotic. Something that will grab them and throttle them by the throat, make them uncomfortable.

"The legion is fractured. The people are restless. The hordes demand tribute.

The empire crumbles...and you (point for effect here, a slow, sweeping gesture with your finger as your eyes pierce individuals) are her sappers."

It's difficult because I don't want my opener to leave the idiots in there clueless

Just give a bunch of stats that makes it sound like you're talking about America, then say that it ended horribly, then reveal it was stats about Rome.

It amuses me that so many people think the fall of Rome was a bad thing.

Often in speech class, peer input is part of the grading process.

Thesis Sentence:
The Fall of Rome was caused when the exploitative Imperial economy supplied enough wealth and leisure time for their adult women to practice widespread pubic hair grooming.

You got to hook them right out of the box.

And many other countries would say the fall of America wouldn't be a bad thing.

Doesn't mean they aren't similar bc it's your country.

It wasn't decadence that destroyed the Roman Empire but Christianity.

Am serious. That was the thesis of Will Durant, Edward Gibbon, and Gore Vidal.

Obama didn't invent food stamps either. He just tripled the amount the govt. doles out.

My favorite is the tards whose only comeback is, "Well, Obama is only three times as shitty as the worst decisions ever made by Reagan and Bush. Take that!!!"

On topic: Rome fell due to internal strife.

How can I start it off to catch audiences attention? Any ideas?

Open with this:

“The history of nations shows that the cycle of the body politic slowly but surely undergoes change . . .

It progresses –
From bondage to spiritual faith
From spiritual faith to courage
From courage to freedom
From freedom to abundance
From abundance to selfishness
From selfishness to complacency
From complacency to apathy
From apathy to fear
From fear to dependency
From dependency to bondage.”

Or he could just fart right before speaking. It'll get everyone's attention and they'll listen, hoping for a second fart.

He could also just print off the last few posts prior to this one and make comparisons to degeneracy of Roman society to that of current American society and our radical tolerance for ignorance and depravity.
