I know what I've read. How much has the truth been twisted in this movie? Move to movie/tv if you wish.

The truth is all slaves lived in splendid harmony until white liberals stepped in and convinced them they deserved autonomy.

I mean without seeing the movie I'm not sure how to respond. I'm excited to see it, but I haven't been following all the coverage so I'm not sure how many liberties were taken.

The story is fascinating though. I can answer questions about the historical event but don't know much about the movie.

Im not teaching Antebellum South anymore, switched to Government and Politics.

I can, too. That's my point. Give me a nice, succinct historical perspective.

He was way ahead of his time and in over his head.

Actually, I have no idea but blame global warming.

Great question, and like all great questions extremely difficult to answer. I'm not ashamed to admit that it is one beyond my intellectual capability, So I'll resort to simply telling a story. I was having drinks with David Blight (oddly enough he bought me a *new craft beer that was all the rage in New Haven... Abita Strawberry) and I asked his thoughts on Nat Turner. He gave a deep sigh and said "Some men are impossible to encapsulate. He is an absurd character of contradictions more befitting of Homer. He was both deeply heroic and deeply villainous. Like Jefferson, a man easily triumphed or scorned by any ideology, for he can be whatever one wishes him to be."

Perhaps that's not the answer you want. But I've been drinking and that's the best I can offer for now.

Or John Brown. I think that Brown would make for a much more interesting story, personally. Problem in this societal context, he's not black.

Oh well, back to having 2-3 black students per year ask me if MLK freed the slaves.
