Getting your house tested for mold?

Anybody have any experience with this? Do general inspectors do this? What does it usually cost? What happens if they find it?
My family has always been fairly healthy but the last couple of months my kids and wife can not get well. Don't know if it's just first winter in Pre-School or what but it sucks so I'd like to see if there's something more to it.

They have do it yourself mold testing kits at Home Depot for $10-30 that can test specific areas for mold. In the air filter aisle.

Unless you have visible mold or areas where you know water is coming into the house it is rather useless.

I did this when my wife bugged out about mold due to some black dust in the vents and ceiling. No mold was found. We sold the house a year or two later and no mold was found.

Oh I missed this. Bro we have 1 kid who is now 5. We put her in daycare at 2 and I spent most of my vacation time as sick time. The first year of daycare you catch every-fricking-thing!

They may be able to eyeball it but they won't / can't test it to see what kind you have if they do find it. You can eyeball it too. It's not hard really. Check vents, duct work, any leak areas, any areas that get moisture, etc.

Call ServPro or anyone else that does remediation to handle it correctly. Or, again, you can do it yourself depending.
Remove all affected drywall (bleach will kill but is not a long term solution). If there is any mold in the framing, expose it, clean it, dry it, cover with an oil based or shellac primer. Latex primers are not nearly as effective. Make sure the area is completely dry with no water/moisture before covering.
You can also run a dehumdifier for a few days with a HEPA filter to help remove the spores.
If the moisture is coming from the humidity in the air due to a shower, bath or improperly vented dryer, you NEED more ventilation and air circulation. Stagnant air and moisture are a mold's best friend.
If it's in your vents and duct work, hire a pro.
FYI not all molds are dangerous and not all black molds are dangerous. Cladsporium is pretty benign compared to stachybotrys, and they are both "black mold."

I did the same when my little girl got sick. I had a guy come out to test and had the same black dust I. Vents. He said the dust usually is not mold. Really the only worries for mold is when you have had water damage.
I switched to the expensive allergen filters and the dust, sneezing, and coughing went away.

Spot on. Lots of allergy issues in my house. I switched to the highest rated filters and its amazing the difference. And its not like the highest rate filters are that much more expensive anyway.

seriously? every HVAC guy i've spoken to said these are a joke and stick with the 99 cent filters and change them once a month and you're better off.

HVAC guy = HVAC expert, not allergy expert

thats certainly true, however rather than risk an early demise to your blower due to overly restrictive pleated filters, if you're concerned about allergens why not install an air purifier rather than clog up your HVAC with filters that put a strain on the system?
