Getting rid of popcorn ceilings?

Bought a house and the worst thing about it is that it has popcorn ceilings. I haven't moved a damn thing in it yet, so I have the opportunity to do it now. A few questions:
1) Worth removing the popcorn yourself?
2) Worth doing the texture/touch up and paint yourself?
3) Any good contractors or laborers who will do 1 and/or 2 above?
4) Any general tips or advice.
Thanks in advance.
Oh, and this is a 2000sqft house. Not a small task.

As far as removing it, Just rub your palm back and forth across all of it. Make sure someone with a lot of hair is standing beneath you to catch it so it doesnt fall on your floor

unless you have done sheetrock before dont even try it.
probably gonna spend almost as much taking it off as it would cost to run new rock.

wet the celing a little bit and use a drywall scraper to get it all off. I did it to a few rooms at an old condo and it was pretty easy
eta: there are kits out there to texture it yourself, but probably a pro job would be the way to go. not a whole lot of labor involved so it shouldnt be very costly

Sounds like scraping is 'technically' easy enough for me to do and probably doesn't require any experience. I tend to agree with you on the new stuff they are going to be putting up. I'll leave that to professionals. Any recommendations?

You go back over it with something and paint it?

Yep, scrape it off and knockdown or orange peel it.

Why the hate for the popcorn? I am waiting for it to make the huge comeback and all you fools will regret removing it.

I think you spray a mixture of vinegar and something on it before you scrape it. I overheard a conversation about this today.

Get a pump sprayer and wet the ceiling. Scrape and let dry. If it's painted don't even try.

check my edit. We had a guy come after us and re texture. We painted it ourselves afterwards.

Congrats on the 30 year old house.

If the ceiling has been painted, good luck. Get a contractor. If not, its not too bad. U just need something to spray water onto it to get it damp. (Not wet). I used my paint sprayer. Then get a 10-12 inch putty knife and scrape it off.
If u have carpet, get some heavy mil plastic and put it down to catch it.
Once u scrape it off, you'll need a sheetrock taper to come in and remud the taped seams and texture.

It's very easy to remove, but that's a pretty large space if it's throughout the whole house.
