So my car is a POS like 285k, door handle broken, front brakes just started making a horrible noise and need replacing so instead of doing that I'm just getting a new one.

It's looking like I'm gonna buy my buddies car so won't be going through a dealership or anything.

What's the process of getting rid of the old one and is there anyway I could get any money out of it even if it's just for parts or whatever?

Post an ad on Craigslist

Just make sure to go to a title transfer place to properly cancel the license plate and transfer the title so nothing the new owner does comes back on you later

Tow it to Alabama and leave it in someone's front yard. They'll never notice.....

Give it to a charity or get $300 for it on Craigslist and put it on black.

Man if you had posted this in the beginning of winter I would have put some cash in your pockets and used it as my daily winter beater. If all the car needs is a door handle and replacement brakes, I'm sure there is someone who would love to pay you 4-500 for it and have a car.

Donate it to charity. Find one that will come pick it up and transfer title and give you receipt for value to claim on taxes(if you itemize).

In the same boat. I have a 2000 Volvo S80 with a gazillion miles that went through three family members hands as a high school car. Every body panel has been run into something. Interior trashed. Can't get it inspected because the damn parking lights are busted, etc. But it runs and AC blows cold.

How would a charity possibly put a value on that?

I'm sure you have some redneck friends. Sell it to one of them for a hundred bucks so they can put it on their property and shoot at it.

Guys, there are people that will come to your house and junk the car for you. Scrapping cars is how some people make a living.

But seriously, just how rough is the car?

I live out of state now, but maintain a residence near Clinton. I totaled a 97 Camry back in May of last year, but have the carcass still. I need a beater car to run around in when I come in to visit my mom. Most of the parts from my 97 will fit on the 2000. I'll be coming home for a visit within a couple weeks. Perhaps we can make a deal, as long as the car is not just gross.

Go to kellybluebook and type in all of your information/year/model etc... and choose the poorest condition for the car and get the value.

Go to a local Mechanic and tell him you're looking to get rid of your car for scrap and try to get what the blue book value is (you won't have a ton of leverage but this way will save you time and money from trying to private sell on the open market)

If you agree on a price take off your license plate and turn it into the DMV and you're done, don't forget to cancel your insurance a couple days later after the DMV files it away.

A salvage yard company will buy it for a nominal fee ($100 or so) and come pick it up. That's the easiest way to do it. Remove the license plate first, and after they take it, cancel it with the state and then your insurance. You can do all that over the phone, but I went to the Express DMV and turned my plate in.

The thing I've seen most people do is tow it to Mexico. Be sure to stop at every garage sale you pass and fill the inside with junk.
