I think it's just people with very short tempers, and a large dose of immaturity, who actually get mad at that.
When/if someone flips me off in traffic I just smile and very enthusiastically wave back. Confuses them and/or pisses them off more, and I just laugh to myself.

When I lived in Baton Rouge I flipped off someone at least once a day while driving - all deserved.
I told that to a friend of mine and he confessed that he had never flipped anyone off ever. I can't imagine.

Love the confused/further angry reaction.

There are crazy people out there. Be very careful.
Pulled out in front of a guy once and he rolled up next to me on my left at the next stop light. He rolled down his passenger window, leaned over, and pointed what looked like a 44 mag right at me. I said "man I'm sorry, don't shoot, I was in a hurry". He looked crazy angry but didn't shoot. I let him get way in front before I sped up. That was in FL where people seem more uptight.
Another time in my younger days I was headed back to college late at night and some crazy kept passing me then slowing down. After several episodes I decided to kick his azz, pulled off on the shoulder, and he pulled over behind me. I got out and walked back to his car and told him to get out so I could kick his a__. He stayed quite and suddenly I was looking down the barrel of a pistol pointed at my head. I freaked and grabbed the gun with both hands but he fell back and ripped it out of my hands. I dropped to the ground, ran back to my car, and hauled azz.
These days at an older age I'm a lot more relaxed and gladly give way to people who seem in a hurry. I even take my time and obey speed limits.

Got flipped off yesterday while driving through Austin, TX. Speed limit on the tollway was 75 and homeboy decided 55 was appropriate. Came to a bottle neck so I slowed down and got over a lane, as I could see my opening ahead via the other lane. The guy behind me didn't like the fact that I wanted to get over at that point, so he attempted to speed up and block me in. I got over, dispite his asinine move, and he gave me the bird because of it. Once I got to an opening, I slowed down to allow him to get right beside me. He again gave me the bird, so I just smiled and waved as I drove off. That really set him off and he started screaming, blaring his horn, and going off as I put him in the rear view. In short, always be way too nice to someone who gives you the bird. Always pisses them off more.

Interesting timing on this thread - I flipped off probably the third person, ever, yesterday, and I've been driving 30+ years.
I probably overreacted, but the a-hole races up on the outside lane, like he's going to pass me right before an exit - so driving defensively, I go ahead and brake to let him through cleanly, then he all but stands on it, while I'm slowing down - I almost came to a stop on the interstate trying to let the moron in. Once he got in front, I gave him a score of "1" on his driving and he responded in kind.
a-hole.
