Who the frick tells their insurance when they get a dog?
You can tell the people on the OT that haven't been sued before.

If you have any kind of property, you need to protect it w various tools. Insurance is one of them.

I asked this on the last "guard dog" thread - nobody here has a rider on their insurance for their dog apparently.

I'll report back later this year. My paver project is on hold as the ground is frozen, Once I finish that and get the fence up around about a 1/2 acre, I'm gonna seriously start looking for a GSD. Can't wait.

In conclusion, I have limited experience but I think Sheps need a ton of socializing and training.

Show lines have much different temperament than working lines. Working lines are the best IMO, but you do have to spend time and bond with them.

That's why they aren't a good dog for everyone. They are smarter than many of their owners and most Louisianans

Had a Sheltie/Shepherd mix...

Was the greatest dog in the history of dogs.
He did nip at OTHER kids ankles when they ran toward the road, bit he never broke skin, so...

Was brilliant, loyal, funny (he laughed)...so awesome, I can never do it again.

They want to be cool like German Shorthaired Pointer owners.

Which btw is a much better dog than the German Shepards. Aka Hitler's dogs aka Nazi dogs aka SS Shepards.

It really depends on what OP wants out of their dog. If they want a protector that's attached to their immediate family but also energetic and smart, you can't get any better than a german shepherd. But if you want a dog that loves everyone and everything, including the stranger on your property, the cat you just brought home, or the stranger with your kids in the park, then GS are not the way to go and I'd suggest a lab instead.

Solid advice and really just comes down to this.

I have 2 of them

One is a female and is my dog. I got her after she was an adult. It took her a long time to trust us, probably a year, and she is very anxious at times. She now fully trusts us, and she is very protective of me and my wife around guest. She absolutely hates female dogs. She loves riding in the Jeep with the top off. We take her out a lot and sometimes she gets very anxious around crowds, we have to take her home at these times. She is great with our other dogs and protects our chickens very well. She is the head protector of the house. She is very smart and listens to me.

The other we got as a puppy from my brother. He is male, still a puppy, and is going through a wild stage right now. He worships the ground my wife walks on and won't leave her side when she is home. He is very smart and listens very well. He is very sociable, but he doesn't let anyone come towards the house unless we let them.

I have had many GS over the years. The female we have now is the first one that has been this anxious.

They are high energy dogs and need a lot of exercise. We have a lot of land for them to run on and they run a lot. We spend a lot of time with them and give them plenty of toys.

We also have a Fiest and they both play with him. He spends a lot more time on his bed than the other 2. He is a lot more laid back than either of them.

Both of my GS are great around children. The boy is sometimes a little rough because he is so playful, not because he is mean towards them.

Our first dog as a married couple was a GSD. We made a point to meet his parents first, as that's a sure sign of future temperament. They were super friendly and laid back, and that was how our dog was. He was like a lab in a GSD's body. Zero aggression to people or other dogs, even when dogs were being aggressive to him. He was just a big, cuddly baby!

When the kids were born, he just tolerated their existence. He was very in tune with my husband and was 100% aware that he was the alpha. The dog just followed his lead.

Make a point to socialize your dog like crazy. Take him everywhere you can and let him hang out with other people (kids included) other dogs. The Art of Raising a Puppy (Monks of New Skete) is an amazing book! We have used it with our other dogs, as well.

Oh, and be prepared for a LOT of hair. This is when your spring for the Dyson.

Just my personal experience. We had a German Sheperd that didn't care about the two cats. He also guarded my oldest daughter in her crib when she came home from the hospital and growled if anyone unfamiliar got near her. It was pretty cool. Her own personal protector.

I have had 4 of them and they are awesome. Well behaved, easily trained, and loyal as can be. Any dog will need to be exercised and will have some sort of hair issues but for my money and time, German Sheppard's are the best choice but that's just my opinion!

Had a family member's German Shepherd try to bite my two year old. I've been around the dog multiple times and it was never aggressive. My daughter was playing on the floor by my feet and the dog came around the corner growling. I snatched her up quickly as he started at her and got my arm before my uncle got the dog. They are on my dog shite list

I have a 13 year old GSD. Most loyal dog I'll ever have. They'll chew a lot as puppies so you got to make sure they get plenty of exercise. Also, socialize the puppy as much as you can. If you raise the dog right it won't be aggressive but will definitely protect your family.

Also prepare thy anus for the shedding.

ETA: I also have two cats and they get along just fine. She's never been aggressive toward them cause she knows they are part of the family.

I currently have a 5 year old German Shepherd female.

She is far and away the most intelligent dog I've ever had. When she was young, we spent every free hour I had working on training, training, and more training. I wouldn't feed her breakfast...I'd take her big bowl of food, fill it up, and work on basic commands...sit, stay, lay down, heel, wait, taking food from my hand gently, etc over and over and over, one little piece of dog food at a time. By 1 year old, her behavior was near perfect.

I don't have kids here living with her, but kids next door often play with her. She loves it and is super gentle with them. I do have a Labrador puppy here with her now, and they get along great. The German has never once had an issue with anybody at my house. The one time I've ever seen her display any aggressiveness is at the vet. When she goes in for her yearly shots and checkup, she ALWAYS shows teeth and/or snaps at the vets, even with me holding her. Something about getting that stool sample thing shoved up her arse and the needles that she just isn't a fan of.

They are very family oriented and demand attention. She was very destructive as a puppy if she wasn't given attention. I couldn't leave her inside while I wasn't home because she'd chew anything in sight. Indoor potty training was a breeze though. This labrador is giving me fits with that. Now she has chilled out and I can leave her indoors all day if I need to and she won't bother a thing.

The absolute worst thing about her is the frickin hair. When I tell you that you will have to sweep/vacuum every single day, I mean that. The shedding is terrible, especially in the spring/summer.

We don't have a child but I would be a little concerned with how rough she can be. It's not intentional but it's just how she plays. She'll bump into me pretty hard just following me around the yard and I'm not sure she'd understand how to take it down a notch for a smaller human.

She absolutely will. I don't have kids either but when my niece and nephews would come over my girl would be as gentle as she could be with them.

Every shepherd I’ve been around has been a big goof.

They have a unique smell.

I can't speak on pure blood German Shepherds, but my dog is a GS mix, and she is the sweetest, smartest, most gentle dog I've ever owned. Plus she's big enough to scare folks if she has to.
