go to any bar and ask for Greg Oggle, AKA the mayor of the Gaslamp District.

Stayed at the US Grant, a while back. Walk and find something there is tons of stuff, you are also a few blocks away from the water and seaport village.
as far as driving, hit up one of the beach communities for a day. I went to Ocean Beach and sunset cliffs, Have a friend who lives there. it was pretty cool

If you like Jim Croce (meaning oldish) like me. He has a bar there. He is of course dead but I believe his wife runs the place. It was cool. Cool music other than his stuff too.
Other things to do?
1. Be amazed by how clean a place that sort of looks like the FQ can be.
2. Be amazed and or pissed if you smoke. Amazed that that many bars have that many people who aren't smoking. You can take your pants off when back to the room. And when you wake up the next morning put them back on without recoiling from the smoke smell.
3. YardHouse. It is a chain now and we have one here in Houston. The SD location seemed to have more beer and more food.
