All this. Very true.

Seems good to me. I'd live in Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, or Montana if an opportunity came up. I could probably deal with New Hampshire too.
I hear some pretty terrible things about Rhode Island.

Almost kinda semi-relevant
It's relevant to the extent that a good portion of those saying there are better states to live in, have really nothing upon which to base that assumption.

How in the hell is Texas not at the top of that list? Never met any people as a collective who thought that they were better than everyone simply because of where they live more than Texans.

I've always had a suspicion that people will be more satisfied with their location if they move there because they choose, and not because of family ties, jobs, familiarity. Seems like common sense.
Lots of folks move to scenic areas because they choose to be there. I think that's the reason many Western states as well as Vermont and NH are high on the satisfaction list.
People living somewhere because of family probably aren't going to be as happy with their location as those who move somewhere for lifestyle.

I wonder how many of those people that say their state is best have lived in other states for a considerable amount of time? And conversely, how many have lived in one state their whole life and are just beating their chest saying theirs is the best?

The two seem difficult to rectify and makes you wonder upon what 73% (ETA, I suck at math) of Louisianians could be basing their opinion that there are "better" states to live in.
I guess it's just an assumption that there HAS to be something better than this out there?
Actually it's easy to rectify the two. On one hand you've got 73% of people in Louisiana saying there's better states to live in while on the other hand most people outside Louisiana agrees with that 73% and live somewhere other than Louisiana. That's why such a high percentage (79.37%)of people in Louisiana are native born. Because few outside Louisiana want to move to Louisiana.

This actually makes sense to me. For instance, most people don't live in a place like Alaska or Montana unless you have made a conscious, considered decision to live there. So those people naturally think it's best.
But in LA most people live here because they've always lived here. They haven't chosen it because it's the best state, it's just inertia.
I thought about this when there was a Nashville thread earlier this week. Literally 100% of the Nashville tigers raved about how great it was. But of course, those are all people who specifically chose to move from Louisiana to Nashville. I bet if you went to Rocky Top Talk and asked the same question you'd find lots of posters who lived in Nashville but thought it was lame.

Louisiana....
A great place to visit, but a shitty place to live.
Just the other day there was a poll that said NOLA had over 9 million visitors last year.
I's say that's probably more visitors than the entire state of Alabama has had in the past 4 years.

Travelers spent $11 billion in Alabama last year
March 7, 2014
Montgomery, Ala – Travelers spent $11 billion and were responsible for more than 163,000 jobs last year in the state, according to preliminary estimates from the Alabama Tourism Department. This represents a 3.1% increase in travel spending over the previous year.
The report showed that travelers spent money on hotels, restaurants, retail purchases and transportation with every $98,170 in travel industry spending creating one direct job in Alabama. Additionally for every two direct jobs created, the state’s economy indirectly creates one additional job.
“The tourism numbers for 2013 bring great economic news for Alabama. The dollars spent on tourism creates jobs, it grows local economies and generates needed tax revenues. Without the dollars collected by the tourism industry each household in the state would end up paying almost $400 in additional taxes,” state tourism director Lee Sentell said.
Estimates showed that more than 24 million people visited the state last year. Over the 10-year-period from 2003 to 2013, travel spending in Alabama has increased 51% according to the report conducted by Auburn University Montgomery.
The top five counties with the largest travel-related expenditures are: Baldwin County with $3.2 billion in travel-related spending, Jefferson County was second with $1.6 billion, Madison County was third at $997 million, Mobile County ranked fourth with more than $916 million and Montgomery County was fifth with $661 million.
The complete state tourism economic impact report will be available in early April.

Unsatisfied but too lazy or insecure to get off their arses and explore the unknown. At least that's the impression I get from the few friends that are still there.

you get about 4 million visitors to the coast between Fort Morgan, Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, what the frick are the other 16 million people doing?

North Dakota is the only place on here I would not want to live...at all. The rest seem like they would be good places to live.

I do wonder what percentage of people in this poll from Connecticut, Jersey, and Rhode Island are transplants working in New York, Philly, or Boston which could screw those numbers at all. But yeah, Louisiana is probably the only state on there I could see myself living in. Thank goodness for New Orleans.

Spending billions of dollars on everything from football games, rounds of golf, races, fishing, hunting, you name it. And the best part is despite having similar numbers of tourists visit our state as yours, somehow we manage to keep those tourists from leaving our largest city smelling like piss.

good for the Gumps, I'd say without looking it up, Louisiana probably has closer to 30 million visitors a year.
