Maybe this will explain it a bit more for you:

quote:

One of the less-understood features of Google Play Music is its local caching of music for offline listening. Adding to the simplicity of a streaming service, Play Music will automatically cache music that you listen to often on your device to cut back on data usage when you go back to the same song again. By default, the app will cache as it streams, meaning that it is downloading the entire song for offline use as soon as you hit "play" on any song in the app. In nearly every case this is the best choice, as the data usage is no higher than streaming in high quality, but will cut down usage to zero when listening again. If you truly will never listen to the song again, or are simply browsing through songs and not listening to them in their entirety, uncheck the "Cache during playback" option in the settings.

Also, you can hit the pin icon on an album and pin it to your phone which is basically storing it on your phone full time.

quote:

Similarly to caching, using Google Play Music's option to "pin" music to your device is a great way to save on data usage. Pinning is simply on-demand caching of specific albums for offline access. You can pin items that are part of your own uploaded collection, as well as anything you find in the store as part of your All Access subscription. Pinned items will download in the background as soon as you hit the pin icon found in the album view of the app, and will only download via Wifi by default. While Google's default caching does a good job of keeping your most listened-to music available for offline access, it's nice to know you can force a download at any time when you know you'll be without a consistent connection for streaming.

Settings within the Google Music app on your phone and check "Automatically Cache".

So now basically I will have my entire Itunes library saved to the cloud and also saved to my phone?

My other question was if I want to download a song say either on my phone or my desktop, How would I ensure it is added to my library? (and by download I mean steal from a third party)

Automatically caching means music you play will "cache" or "store" on your phone locally, it will do that for about the last 5 albums you play.

If you want to completely store an album on your phone you pin the album. It literally says "Keep on Device".

Simple, add the folder your downloads go to to your Music Manager desktop program I told you to DL and check "automatically upload new items" so whenever you download a torrent and it saves the album/tracks to My Music or wherever you save it on your computer, it will then automatically upload to Google Music and then be available on your phone and website.

Also, you can download the BitTorrent App or Kickass Torrents App on the Google Play Store and just download all your music through their apps on your phone and it will then store it directly on your phone.

I'm totally with you here. While I've never owned an iPhone/iPod partly because of iTunes, Google Play is indeed retarded because it doesn't have a function to sync your desktop folder full of music to your connected Android device's SD card.

As to why the Google Music model doesn't work for me—I use my phone as my backup for my music collection, so I want the complete collection on my phone. In order to do that with Google Music I would have to download every song from the cloud to my phone, which would take forever. I manually copied the files to my SD card (which I'm fine with doing even though it's less convenient than a syncing function), but Google Music sees that as different from the exact same files that were uploaded to the cloud, so on my phone Google Music shows two copies of each song.

Another reason I'm not comfortable with the Google Music model is that I'm not convinced that the cached version on the phone is identical to the original. The music that comes from the cloud could be compressed.

Just pin them all on your phone before you go to bed, they'll be done by the time you wake up.

Took me about 2 hours to download 4K songs to my phone.

Is there any option available to have my entire music library stored on my phone by one click or do I have to go select everything? I have an sd card and only about 10 gb of music so that isnt an issue.

It only says "automatically upload items added to itunes so basically anything I download I will just add to itunes and use that as my desktop player. If I leave that box checked then that music will always copy to google music if I am correct.

I think you have to select each album you want to keep on your phone. Never seen a "pin all music" option.

The box at the bottom on mine says "Automatically upload songs added to my selected folders".

My select folder for example is "DL'ed Music" which is where uTorrent saves all of my downloads so anything I DL is automatically uploaded. But yeah you could use iTunes if you want.

As long as you have fast enough internet/LTE/4G, and High Quality setting checked, it is 320Kbps.

Any idea how to change that folder?

Thats the option that has frustrated me. I would have to think a good amount of people would like to have their entire library stored to their phone so they do not have to stream music.

When you say you can do it overnight by pinning how would you do that. Don't you manually have to press the pin button each time a song/album comes on?

What program do you use? uTorrent?

Yes and no, most people that do would just throw it on an external SD card and be done with it and the others like me with unlimited data only stream the music. The pinning and caching is really only meant for your most listened to music more so than an entire library, but yeah a pin all would be nice for the others.

Just pin every album, it will download them all at the same time, so before bed just go through each album and hit pin, it will start to download, go to next album, hit pin. Start them all, go to bed, wake up and they're all on your phone locally.

I don't download entire torrents or albums. I use like a youtube to mp3 converter or something like that for individual songs.

With that said I can't pin albums so would I basically have to pin everysong?

And for the guy saying itunes is stupid or whatever...with itunes you could have your entire library on your phone and each song had a checkbox next to it on the desktop interface to choose which songs you wanted and didnt want saved to your phone and always automatically synced. Seems to me like the simplist way to do it.

I also have an app on my phone that downloads mp3's for free. How do I ensure that ends up on both my phones library and my google music library accesible from my desktop?

I dont understand how or why android does not have a comparable standard to itunes.

Because this "standard" that Apple has created with iTunes is piss-poor. It does things like rename or delete files when you don't expect it to. It makes it difficult to migrate your collection to another platform (like you are having trouble with here).

We have long had a very good system for managing mp3's -- the filesystem. Unfortunately, people are so reliant on iTunes these days that basic file management is becoming a rare skill.

Say what? Go to the albums tab, touch the 3 dots for settings, select keep on device. Album starts downloading.

Damn man, for one, youtube to mp3 converts are shite quality. And two, you should just DL torrents.

Just download the kickass torrents app on your phone and use it. I'm not sure if you just download an mp3 from like mp3skull if it would go to the cloud never tried it as I always use torrents for the higher quality.
