Fridge power went out- how long is food good?

Thought it didn't feel that cold this morning before work, figured somebody left a door cracked. Got home this afternoon and fridge and freezer definitely not working. Let's assume it's been out 16 hours, is the stuff inside still okay or when has it been too long?

Depends how many times you opened the door.

open it every 15 minutes to check the temperature inside.....

I think the general rule of thumb is, without it being opened at all, 24 hours or so. Also depends on how full each of them were. Might be rubbish, but someone told me one time that if your chest freezer is at least 80% full and everything is frozen, food will still be good 2-3 days without power. It is one of the reason I freeze gallon jugs of water and leave them in there to take up space. About 5-6 large ice blocks will help keep the food safe in a power outage.
I'd toss anything that might spoil though. Not worth drinking spoiled milk or eating bad meat.

Do people really have to ask? Make decision on your own

To give you a rule of thumb for restaurants it is dead if you leave it in the temperature danger zone, 40-140, for 4 hours

Yeah i cannot understand asking this.
The answer is: it depends on what temperature it was and is and how long it has been that temperature and what foods you have.
Since you can’t figure it out yourself, do this: leftovers, milk, and meat, throw out. Bottled condiments, keep. Cheese, keep. Eggs, either or.

Rule of thumb is 17 hours.

How strong is your stomach? My wife left some grilled chicken on the counter at our office from lunch the day before and I ate it the next day.
If its just been a day and the fridge was mostly left closed, you are likely fine.
Refrigeration hasn't been around long and we have just become weak stomached and high maintenance in regards to food. You will likely be perfectly fine, but most of the OT and all of the FDA would tell you to toss anything raw to be safe.

Get some bags of ice in it

I'd at least throw out any processed sandwich meat, that crap goes bad fast. Ice is the answer.
