Are there any real benefits to being a Mason?

There is some personal satisfaction in belonging to a fraternal organization that helps people. I enjoy getting out one night every 2 weeks for a while to meet with some good guys. It's a business meeting and some camaraderie. Occasionally a meal. Before you consider joining you need to know this - the first question on the petition is do you believe in God. If the answer is no there is no use to go any further .... but this isn't a religious organization. I still am a member of an organized religion.

Is it really some super secretive organization or is it just a frat for adults?

I understand that college fraternities have secret hand shakes or some way(s) of identifying their brothers. Our "secrets" are ways to know who is actually a brother mason ..but on steroids .... and turbocharged. That is what the weeks of studying is all about. We commit all of this to memory. Nothing is written down.

Someone mentioned Prince Hall masons earlier in the thread. That is the black version. The white masons and Prince Hall masons have been joined together in some way in a few states. I would have no problem with meeting with a black lodge.
