Recently visited Fort St. Philip down in the Louisiana bayou. Unlike Fort Jackson, no one is taking care of the property. I would like to find some books or articles or anything that can show me what the fort looked like during the Civil War, Spanish-American War or when it was a training post during WWI.

I can't imagine what it was like to construct something like that deep in the swamp in the 1800s. Worthwhile visit. Thanks.

It is privately owned by a quite fractious group, thus no agreement on use, care taking, or its future. It sadly seems destined to crumble. What were you doing out there, just checking it out?

At one time the wreckage of one of the sunken Confederate ships could still be seen at low water.

I always heard it was actually pretty dangerous to visit. Supposedly was overrun with mocasins and there was unexploded ordinance depending where you stepped.

I still want to go, I bet there's cool stuff to be had if you dug around enough. That's the kind of thing that if not restored should be excavated by an archaeology team. In the words of Indy

It's Snake City. And gators. Anything of value was taken long ago. I suppose if you had an excavator you might be able to dig something up and maybe preserve th place, but that's a long shot. Most of the buildings are 90% underground. You can see where the fortification guns were set up.
