It has 40 already. It gains a net of 12 per week. After 10 weeks it will have 120 more. 120+40=160

That's the way my daughter does it, which is great when she comes out with the right answer or the problem doesn't ask her HOW she came to that answer. But when I'm reviewing her homework with her, sometimes she can't explain to me how she got the answer. This is bad in the Common Core world we're entering, where they seem to want to know the process as well as the answer.
Hell, maybe I'm the old-fashioned one here with my insistence on writing a formula to solve the problem.

No. In fact, half the formulas/steps listed here are out of order.
Only one has any type of unit along with the number.
Most these posters used the answer's variable to find the equation.
