For those that like scifi/fantasy, what is your opinion on Star Wars?

I love scifi, can't stand fantasy (even the tiniest bit ruins a scifi book for me for some reason), and despise Star Wars.

Star Wars to me seems like a fantasy soap opera set in space. Somehow it's become the paradigm of science fiction in popular culture which is a real shame. From what I understand of its history the popularity around Star Wars had more to do with its revolutionary at the time visual effects than anything, yet somehow society hasn't been able to move on.

It's 2016, they replaced Luke skywalker with an empowered woman and a minority side kick. Better check your privilege.

I like it as a franchise. I agree that it isn't real science fiction though. It's what the layman thinks of as science fiction because it is more accessible and simpler than actual science fiction.

It did take inspiration from actual science fiction like Dune. Something like Dune which is actually a much better representation of the best that science fiction is too strange and intelligent for a general audience to relate and understand. I think the same about most real science fiction. Science fiction is almost by definition a little more cerebral.

No. It's more of a fantasy/space western. Those that claim it to be science fiction do not know what science fiction really is.

Then you misunderstood. There is so much to the story, the character arcs and development, and just getting lost in the universe.

That is all.

I like Star Wars although I've learned from the Movie Board that only the first two are worth watching and all the rest are horrifying atrocities.

It has more to do with its all out merchandising blitz, the likes of which had never been before. A New Hope is a decent movie, but its basically an elaborate toy commercial. I'd have a higher opinion of these movies if they stopped after ROTJ.

Why does everyone feel like every movie has to fit in a certain genre? Star Wars is sci-fi/fantasy/western/space opera blended together.

The first movie was revolutionary considering the special effects that were being used when it was made. The story was okay, but to a little kid like me, the special effects were what won you over.

Well, it is fantasy. I guess you correctly identified the genre, since it really isn't science fiction. It's science fantasy. It's no 2001.

It's ok, I'm not a fan of Dune either.
