"Fixer Upper" star Chip Gaines is being sued by two former business partners in a million-dollar fraud lawsuit. According to court documents obtained by KWTX, John L. Lewis and Richard L. Clark, former co-owners of Magnolia Realty, claim Gaines bought them out of the company two days before HGTV picked up "Fixer Upper" which "prominently featured the 'Magnolia' brand name." Lewis and Clark filed their 24-page lawsuit Wednesday in state district court in Waco, Texas, and are seeking more than $1 million in damages and non-monetary relief, KWTX reports. The scorned business partners say Gaines bought their shares of Magnolia Realty for $2,500 each while working with HGTV on the future hit show.

This sounds like solid business planning by Chip, and sour grapes from the partners.

That show is great and pisses me off at the same time.
"My budget is $180,000"
"Oh well we have this half acre on a lake with a 4 bedroom, 3.5 bath for 150k, which leaves us $30k to completely renovate the entire thing"
Is Waco that fricking cheap?

Sounds like they didn't do their due diligence on what their partner was up to.
Also, sounds like they got paid once.

They do three rooms, maybe 4 if it's a master bath.

Welcome to Texas. And yes. Housing is dirt cheap.

Sounds like they made a poor business decision. Lots of these types of shows never make it and generally the "stars" make very little on their first contract.

Point still stands.
They gut flooring, walls, replace roofs, completely install new kitchen appliances and cabinets, etc.
IRL the stuff they do should cost double.
And that doesn't even mention the ridiculously low real estate prices.
