EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) — A New Jersey firefighter will lose his $78,096-a-year job after being convicted of shoplifting $7.98 worth of items. A Municipal Court judge on Friday said 34-year-old Ashton Funk, of Northfield, has to forfeit his jobs as a firefighter and lifeguard after being convicted of shoplifting from a convenience store in Margate in August. His attorney is appealing the conviction. Funk wouldn't comment. Funk wasn't on-duty as a Margate firefighter or member of the beach patrol at the time of the offense. But the Atlantic County prosecutor's office wanted him dismissed from the job he's held since 2011, saying a public employee is subject to dismissal if convicted of an offense involving dishonesty.

Obviously there are worse crimes but this has got to be the stupidest crime you can commit.

Same thing I'm thinking... Looks like he's stealing from the county as well...

Didn't realize firemen made that kind of money... Thought they did it for the retirement and always had a second income..?

That's crazy that a fireman makes that much. I wish I could get paid 80k to barbecue and play basketball all day

If you earn $78K a year, don't steal $8. No sympathy.

According to:
LINK /

50-60k around the Louisiana options scales up to the 75-80k range in the New Jersey options. Working as a fireman and a lifeguard or whatever to make what he was making doesn't sound outlandish at all.
