A Japanese billionaire has bought a painting by Jean-Michel Basquiat for $110.5 million, the highest ever price paid at auction for a work by an American artist.
It's a spectacular increase from the last time the painting, "Untitled," was sold -- it fetched a mere $19,000 in 1984. For more than 30 years since then, the picture depicting a skull-like head has remained stashed away in a private collection.
The Japanese buyer, e-commerce tycoon Yusaku Maezawa, said he plans to loan the to institutions and exhibitions around the world before making it the centerpiece of his museum in his hometown of Chiba.
"I hope it brings as much joy to others as it does to me, and that this masterpiece by the 21-year-old Basquiat inspires our future generations," he said in a statement.

Painting is so bad it doesn't even have a name, unless you really say "untitled" is a real name.

It's not bad............but it isn't a 110 million dollars worth of good.

I would pay $100 dollars for it, no doubt.

Modern art is 98% marketing, 2% marketing.

It's not the painting he is buying but the sexual favors that come along with it. Do you even art?

Nice. Going to start stashing my 5th grader's artwork aside for the next 30 or so years, should make for a nice retirement!

It's a pretty sweet painting, I'd pay him a few hundred for it

And basquiat is dead with multiple documentaries and is a cultural icon. Obviously a Japanese guy with cash would want. It's an iconic piece of western culture.

It doesn't look bad but 111 million is absolutely absurd. It looks like something someone would do for a thousand or two and move on to the next one. I have no doubt the guy did this in an afternoon. One afternoon for some guy is worth more than 99.999% of the world makes in a lifetime, there's something wrong. Not necessarily with the seller because they made bank which is what any rational person would do, but with the art market itself.

You realize Basquiat was an enormous figure in modern art right? The price tag is absurd but you sound like an idiot.

This is true. However, you could potentially be making this up since you are the only one in this thread who has ever heard of him before this thread.

Pretty cool painting. Always some sort of underlying meaning or story behind it that makes it "art".

Furthermore, he fricked madonna before she ever sang. Basquiat had it going on until he turned into a dope sick frick up.
