Female teenager mistaken for male suspect in California incident

A black 19-year-old girl claims that she was confronted by police at gunpoint, punched in the mouth and bitten by a police dog after California police apparently mistook her for a much larger, bald black man who was suspected of threatening people with a machete at a nearby grocery store.\

According to the Bakersfield Californian, Tatyana Hargrove’s story is picking up more and more attention after the NAACP in Bakersfield posted a video of her sharing her story to its Facebook. That video, which insists the race played a role in the brutal encounter, has gotten 3.8 million views so far.
quote:
Hargrove explained in the video that she had ridden her bicycle to a local store to buy a Father’s Day gift before realizing the establishment was closed. On her way back home she stopped to get a drink of water out of her backpack. That’s when she noticed three police cars behind of her. The 19-year-old said that one of the officers had already had his gun drawn as soon as he got out of his patrol car.
quote:
The teen said that officers demanded to see her backpack, but she asked them for a warrant. When officers pointed out the K9 dog to her, Hargrove said she got scared and gave them her backpack, but at that point the officer allegedly grabbed her by the wrist and neck and punched her and threw her on the ground. At that point the K9 came and bit her.
Hargrove claims that one officer put his knee in her back and another knee on her head.
“I told him ‘I can’t breathe, I can’t breathe’ and then I started yelling out “somebody help, somebody help me, they’re gonna kill me,’” she said.
quote:
Ultimately, the teen was arrested on suspicion of resisting or delaying an officer and aggravated assault on an officer.
quote:
Police say that they mistook the 5-foot-2, 115 pound Hargrove for a suspect who was described as being a 25 to 30-year-old bald man with a goatee, who stands at around 5 foot 10 and weighs 170 pounds.
Hargrove, arresting officer Christopher Moore wrote in a report, “appeared to be a male and matched the description of the suspect that had brandished a machete and was also within the same complex the suspect had fled to.”
quote:
Moore claimed that he didn’t even realize Hargrove was a woman until she told him her first name, “Tatyana.”
“Don’t lie to me, that’s a girl’s name. What is your name?” Moore asked.
“I’m a girl. I just don’t dress like one,” she said.
Full Story
Any choice of her college and a paid for house are certainly within the realm of possibility with the NAACP now being involved, all while being in the most liberal state in the union.

So they were completely mistaken about who they were looking for, tossed her around and she "resisted" and then she gets arrested.
Sure...makes sense.
Folks...anyone who suggests they'd laugh this off if it happened to them and chalk it up to LEO's just doing their job and getting caught in the wake of mistakes is just the price we pay for underpaid and overworked police are simply lying to themselves.

Out of curiosity if she were to get a nice chunk of change from this and she's currently on govt assistance would she have to give up the assistance after getting paid?

From the article:
quote:
Bakersfield police say they mistook the 5-foot-2, 115-pound Hargrove, age 19, for a suspect who was described as being a 25- to 30-year-old bald man with a goatee, who stands at around 5 foot 10 and weighs 170 pounds.
Hargrove, arresting Officer Christopher Moore wrote in a report, “appeared to be a male and matched the description of the suspect that had brandished a machete and was also within the same complex the suspect had fled to.”
Moore accused Hargrove of ignoring police commands and putting her feet on her bike pedals, appearing as if “she was going to flee.”
At no point does the report say that Hargrove actually left the scene.
Moore said that as another officer, identified as G. Vasquez, was handcuffing the teen, she spun her left shoulder into him, knocking Vasquez off balance and taking him to the ground. Hargrove, police say, fell on top of Vasquez and then spun around into a “mounting position.” That was when Vasquez punched her in the mouth, according to the report.
Moore said at that point he realized Hargrove was within reach of her backpack, in which Moore still apparently suspected held a machete, causing him to release his K9.
Maybe the dog just came and licked her?

This is a local, not national issue, yet has generated 3.8 million views. I assume that every similar incident gets an equal amount of press. Since we don't even see one a day, this is really a minor issue.

This board 3 years ago: "frick those piece of shite cops. At least they didn't shoot a dog this time."
This board after the recent BLM shite: "Honest mistake. Just doing their jobs."

I will be honest the BLM thing got me to care a lot less about police brutality. When you try to make it a black/white thing I just tune out. I doubt I am the only one.

You are right, she should have said "His physical actions are causing a restriction on my breathing, leaving it very laborious to intake the adequate amount of oxygen to not create a physiological stress, creating my sudden panic and need to say things in a self-preservational manner!!!!"

I agree. That was somewhat the point I was making but I could have clarified that better

It sounds like she had a man's knee pushing down on her back when she was handcuffed. I don't think she was repeating a "slogan".
What's becoming even more of a slogan are: "they were doing their job", "he/she resisted", "I was in fear for my life" in and on.

Shes 115lbs. I'll allow the comment from her.
Horse shite the way they responded, and I support law enforcement 110% of the time.
