Changed the brake pads, figured out why one was having uneven wear and fixed the problem, lubricated the caliper slide pins, and bled my brake system.

Are you really considered a baller if you pay people to change your brake pads?

Considering the markup on a brake pad job, and the fact that it can be done in an hour if you know what you are doing, I would say you're a fool.

Places charge like $400 for $50 worth of parts. No way labor on brake pads is worth $350

The slot on the rear brake caliper piston was not "straight" with the pegs on the back face of the inside pad. This resulted in the piston pushing on peg instead of fitting nicely flush with the back of the pad. Installation error from the prior brake job.

Not many people know that if you buy pads with a lifetime warranty (I get Duralast Gold), you can just keep bringing them into the shop and swap them for new pads free of charge after they wear down. The wear must be normal though... i.e. no uneven wear or something on the vehicle itself causing damage to the pad. In my case, the guys at the store are really good about it especially if I didn't know there was a problem there before. They replace my pads anyway. So a $400 job for free.

Ignore the smart aleck comments that will litter this thread.

Great job sir! I do almost all my own auto maintenance and it is very satisfying. Today, I changed my Automatic transmission fluid and oil/filter. I get peace of mind knowing that the job is done right. Plus it's a free education that you may be able to use later in life.

I also repaired a ceiling fan wiring job and a microwave door latch that was faulty. The "misses" is impressed when you conduct yourself like a man who can take care of things in the home.

I know the feeling. I do my own vehicle maintenance. Once you accumulate some tools and do it a few times it pisses you off how much time, hassle and money you used to spend on having other people do it.
A MAN shouldn't have to call another man to do simple maintenance and repair tasks for him.

I do almost everything I can except shocks. It's just not worth it to me to do my shocks so I pay for that.

It is satisfying when you DIY. I don't trust any jack leg to work on my vehicle. There just aren't many real professionals out there anymore. No pride is taken in their work. Part changers mostly. I had my tires rotated and they didn't put the lugs on by hand first before using the air tool and cross threaded a stud. Of course I didn't find out till the next time I went to take it off. Cost me time and money.
They really charge $400 bones to change break pads? Damn!! I've always done my own. Figured I was saving maybe 80 bucks or so.
I saved $600 bucks earlier in the year changing my own upper control arms.
Saved my sister 300 changing her head light on her yukon.
Welcome to the world of not being raped!
