According to wiki, 11 Lockheed Tristars were still in service as of 2015. Don't recognize any of the operators.

Delta used a lot of those way before I became a frequent flyer.

I haven't seen anyone operate that in years, not even as a freighter outside of the US, I doubt they could find enough parts to keep one running for very long

Can't believe I don't remember this. I was going through a bad break up and family member passing at this time but damn.

I heard that FedEx's Asian business grew substantially after Castaway was released. Kind of a gamble having one of your jets crash on the silver screen, but it paid off for them.

Don't think a film version of the Auburn Calloway beat down would have the same impact on FedEx's popularity.

Still seems weird that Tom Hanks boards an Airbus A300 in Memphis but crashes a DC-10 in the south Pacific. Pretty sure neither has the range for those long hauls. They use a fleet of Boeing 777's for those routes now.

I think they still have 4 in inventory. Parts are cannibalized from what was once 24 (going by memory)

The movie Airplane! was pretty recent at the time, they should have known who it was.

If I recall, some old A models. Pretty much stripped out all the really good toys, same as we did with the F14's.

ETA: jokes aside, they were literally in a fight for their lives, adrenaline kicked in, I don't think the FO would have been considered being able to stand, much less fight with the injuries he sustained

ETA: contrast that to Swissair 111, those guys left the cockpit to sit out the crash in the back, granted there was a slight fire in the cockpit

Do you know what causes that horrid noise that comes from the floorboards of the Airbus planes before and during takeoff?

That is a pressure transfer unit that regulates hydraulic pressure during single engine taxis.

There used to be a shitpot full of them parked at Mojave some years back. I don't if they are still sleeping there or they have turned into beer cans since then.
