prison system is a joke with how much contraband gets in to those facilities

make facilities for non-violent drug offender

cool deal. trade off is no visitors. nothing in and nothing out except for employees of the prison. anything that come in to the prison is thoroughly inspected prior to entry to system.

My point is that if you're caught selling drugs or in possession primarily because you're some misguided 20 year old from some shite hole, what will be gained by rehab?

Would carry lesser charges that don't ruin their life. Would still give them a long sentence like jail would. They would have a lot of daily interaction with actual addicts of serious drugs that would help them understand the path they're on.

Agreed except maybe the visitor portion for good-behavior people. Rehabs are often like that too.

I just think we too often conflate drug addiction and drug offenses, which can be misleading and lead to unrealistic expectations.

I think that's fair. But we also exacerbate the situation by throwing these folks in big time prison and giving them life-ruining charges.

After that, they don't have many options but to remain a criminal.

They would plead guilty to lesser charges to receive this sentence so they don’t have felonies ruin their life.

Or, they could not commit the felony to begin with

Why not just get them to do mandatory community service?

*I also realize that a lot of criminals would rather take the charge than do 100 hours of community service

I actually love this idea.

Instead of jail, make them work their arse off for free to help our declining infrastructure.

Pick up trash, paint public buildings, etc.

Your assumptions are based on opinion, not fact.

This already happens. And believe it or not, some non profits out there refuse drug court participants.

Rehab doesn't work until the individual is ready to give up their drug of choice. Forcing rehab is a waste of tax payer money as the individual will more than likely relapse at some point.

How about FN personal responsibility?!

The original POET's in Lafayette used to host AA meeting back in the late 90s.

You think the current system works for non-violent drug offenders?

These people don't need felonies that ruin their lives. That's my biggest thing. They also shouldn't be assimilated with violent criminals in jail and further push them down that path.

I would be fine with just completely separate jails too and lesser charges that don't ruin their entire life. At least that's something.

There are entirely too many variables for this to realistically work. Why would the Federal or State government waste a great portion of their resources on building and staffing rehabilitation centers for minor or personal consumption?

From a public policy standpoint, the "inmates" would have to have to have been caught with a small amount of ___ drugs for personal use only. They couldn't have kilos of cocaine, running a meth lab, or distributing 1,000 pills of ecstasy. They also couldn't commit another crime (theft, robbery, larceny, etc) in connection with the drug charge.

That would seriously leave a fraction (I bet 1/3) of drug offenders that are caught with a little bit of heroine or a little bit of crack. Then, that takes me back to my original point...why would the Federal or State government waste so much of its resources for building and staffing a rehabilitation center for a fraction of drug offenders? How about that money go somewhere else that is useful? Transportation, education, assistance to the elderly, Veteran's benefits, etc?
