It's absolutely FedEx's fault. They chose to leave your goods by your door... it's their risk. They know that. Risk of doing business the way they do it.
I read something online that if it's expensive items, and the seller chose not to purchase Signature Confirmation on the delivery, then it's their fault and not FedEx's.
Could be wrong though, or it could have been a cheap order that didn't need it.
Almost anything expensive I've ordered had to have a signature, such as my new laptop a few months ago, FedEx left a note on my door where I could pick it up or schedule a new delivery time online, or meet the driver on his route.
