FDNY deaths from 9/11-related illnesses are now nearly equal to FDNY deaths on 9/11 itself

The worst day of my entire career was the day I spoke to a FDNY firefighter who worked the site that day and weeks afterwards. He had been diagnosed with cancer related to the dust he breathed in and I had to tell him I couldn’t help him. He understood and wasn’t angry at me but he explained to me how he pulled pieces of bodies out of the rubble for days and just how terrible it was for him. It broke my heart but is a conversation I’ll remember for the rest of my life.

What was in the dust that caused all the cancer? Was it just a shitload of asbestos?

The buildings were supposed to have asbestos abetment done which would have cost an ungodly amount of money

Yep, I can’t even imagine. Knowing that you have to climb all the way up there in full gear, not knowing how you’ll put a fire out at that height, and not knowing how sound the building was structurally. With all of the unknowns and variables against them, they went anyway. God bless them and their families.

You’re part of the problem. If you actually read articles instead of headlines, then you would realize the fricking pork in the package that he vetoed to help aid the first responders after 9/11. It’s the same shite as today, a bill contains Maui relief but then has another billion to some government agency and Ukraine.

Did they not give these guys respirators? I am genuinely curious as that seems to be a massive oversight if not.
Those buildings were bult in late 60's and I am sure they probably used asbestos in those days. No telling what else was being breathed in as well.
