Due to all the recent mass shootings we've seen, I figured this was relevant.

quote:

Mass-casualty active shooter crimes have increased dramatically over the past 12 years, going from 5 per year to an average of 15 per year.

Researchers at Texas State University have found many of the shooters are partially motivated by fame and have looked to past shooters for inspiration.

Now the FBI is encouraging media organizations to rethink the way they cover these stories by not focusing as much attention on the shooters. They call it the "Don't Name Them" campaign.

When an active shooting event results in the deaths and injury of numerous victims, reporters rush to the scene and the focus quickly shifts to the perpetrator of the crime and that could help motivate the next active shooter.

Our media is just filled with cockroaches and we fall for it every time. Its ridiculous.

Too hard to cover up, but not having the psychos face plastered on the TV 24 hours a day for 3 weeks is a good trade off for just having it on Twitter

But how will we know what level of outrage to feel if we don't know what race the shooter is?

That will never happen. The media thrives off information, and by naming a shooter it gives them hundreds of hours of time they can fill.

Cute

Though in this day and age, the shooter's name is going to get released regardless if the media covers it or not.

If you want to get on the media for something, how bout telling them to stop being a bunch of race-baiting liberal fricktards.

There's a bit of a celebrity tweak in the "He who shall not be named" component to this.

I just never get mass shootings. Weird folks.

I've been saying this for years. Most of these guys have lived their entire lives in the background as have been a nobody. As messed up as it is, they see this horrible act as a way to feel important and get noticed. Refusing to name the shooter is a good way to take the celebrity aspect out of the equation.

Agreed. Its a joke that other professions catch flak while these scumbags continue to manipulate and exploit all in the name of clicks and attention.

The public is more to blame.

We eat all this shite up as "entertainment".

They are just giving us what we want.

We have a big culture problem in this country, but don't address it.

Media will ignore this totally. They love the sensationalism. Sensationalism sells commercials.

If one or two of the major news organizations go along with that, and the public rewards them, the rest will follow along.

Even if they don't that will at least reduce the notoriety and maybe demotivate a few potential shooters.

The media will argue that it is their right to report the entire story without having to withhold any facts.

Then the very next story will be about someone using the "n-word".
