I'm not trying to start a pissing contest. I'd prefer to use percentages instead of raw numbers, but I would like to know how common it is for people to donate or volunteer and what charities choose to support.

Personally, I go local. If I'm not really tight on my money that month, i set aside ten percent from each commission that I can donate, Favorite charities are local groups (Buying Spirit Packs for middle school football teams, donating to the radio flyer program at Children's Hospital, local food banks, and if I can't find anything else United Way of Alabama)

I won't lie. I do get some nice marketing out of it as well as making good contacts.

So how do you view charity and donations?

I donate $50-$100 to the National WWII museum every year. My great uncle was in one of the first groups to land at the Battle of Tarawa and he died there. I donated in his honor originally so my grandmother could see her brother honored there, and I have donated at least a little every year since.

ASPCA and World Wildlife Fund, amounts vary, but I give something to each a few times per year. Not into giving to "people" organizations because, for the most part, people suck and can take care of themselves.

Thank you to those who are St Jude supporters. Running the half marathon in December in Memphis and will go right through the campus. The facility is a beautiful one and I was moved to tears on our tour last year before the weekend races.

Makinbacon, it was a much happier place than I thought it would be. I can't imagine as the mother of 3 needing that place. I'm so glad that I haven't needed their services but I'm terribly glad that it's there for those who do need their help!

Charitable donations are separate from a tithe.
