My dad is 92 and still kicking, thank God, but talking to my brother we shared some stories.

Pop's was a steel worker, vet and went to church. Most layed back man you could ever meet, but when shite went wrong, you better back the frick off.

Saw him sleg hammer a tire of my old car because we couldn't get the lug nut off (even after heating it up). He was pissed because he wanted to leave for vacation at 3am and it was 10pm when this happened.

Just thinking about the past, do you recall your mom/dad blowing a gasket?

Good times.

> be 12, bring friend to Alabama - LA tech game
> 20 year old brother brings friend too
> Bama loses fml
> brother's friend on ride home says, "at least it was a good game"

frick YOU WILL, YOU'RE BAD GODDAMN LUCK.

The most surprising part of the story is that my dad, the quintessential Gump, did not strangle the young man. His life was saved by I20 traffic.

All my dad had to do was touch his belt buckle and my brother and I would run and hide

And behave for a few hours

My oldest brother took my dad's boat out fishing with a couple of his buddies. My dad, my next oldest brother, and I had planned a fishing trip the next day because my dad finally had a weekend off. At about 4:30pm on that Friday, my brother called and said he needed some help getting home. He and his buddies had sunk my dad's boat. That might be the angriest I have ever seen my dad, and I'm pretty sure he didn't speak to my oldest brother for months.

When I was a rebellious adolescent, I called my Mom a name I will not repeat here. My old man picked me up by the shirt with one hand, and tossed me across the kitchen. I pissed myself...

I wasn't there but I heard about it. Dad was dove hunting, missed several shots, threw his shotgun out in the middle of the field and left.

My dad was pretty laid back for the most part. We had our "disagreements" when I became a teenager and thought I was a grown man, though.

I do remember him absolutely losing his shite in a road rage incident once when I was probably 8 years old. The first time I ever heard him say the word "frick". To this day his favorite substitute for a curse word adjective is "John Brown".

My old man was covered with tattoos and scars. He got some in prison and others in bars, the rest he got working on old junk cars in the daytime. They looked like tombstones in our yard. And I never seen him when he wasn't tired and mean. He sold used parts to make ends meet, covered with grease from his head to his feet, cussing the sweat and the Texas heat, and the skeeters.
And the neighbors said we lived like hicks, but they brung their cars for paw to fix anyhow.

He was veteran-proud, tried and true. He'd fight 'til his heart was black and blue. Didn't know how he'd made it through the hard times. He bought our house on the G.I. bill, But it wasn't worth all he had to kill to get it.

He drank Pearl in a can and Jack Daniels black, Chewed tobacco from a mail pouch sack.
Had an old dog that was trained to attack, sometimes.

He'd get drunk and mean as a rattlesnake and there wasn't too much that he would take from a stranger.

Put my truck thru a barb wire fence doing about 50mph in reverse with a guy in the back.

Dad was pretty pissed on that one

My dad was a drunk and a bully. One night I hear him vomiting in the bathroom. I was around 6 or so. I walk in the bathroom and made the fatal mistake of asking if he was ok. He put me face first through a mirror. One trip to the er and 9 stitches later I had learned my lesson. New Year’s Eve 1980. I was 5. He and some padna’s were outside popping fireworks. I begged my mom to let me go watch and she finally gave in. Eventually my dad and my godfather, a new Iberia policeman by the way, had chased me under the family station wagon with Roman candles. Ahhh, the good times. SOB had a belt buckle with an English pointer on it and he was not afraid to use it. In 2nd grade we learned alcohol was bad so when I got home I emptied all his Taaka vodka into the sink. He put in some serious work with that English pointer belt buckle that night.

But, alas, he may not have taught me what to do to be a good dad, but he did teach me what not to do.

I have an older brother that is special needs. We were all in Shreveport many years ago when my cousin got married. We went to a casino and they wouldn’t let him in because he didn’t have an ID. He had one, but my dad didn’t bring it.

He blew up on the guard.

We went to a different casino and walked right it.

Ehh, it’s all good. Sincerely, those memories, amongst many others, are why I am the father I am today to my five kids.

My dad would cuss like crazy at a nail or board. He'd throw a hammer or tool down in disgust and call it a motherfricker.

But nothing set him off quite like the Saints losing a close game. He'd toss a radio across the yard and slam his beer on the ground when Bobby Hebert would frick up and lose to Atlanta.
