Family of Slain NSU Football Player Filing Lawsuit

When I originally read the headline I lost it, thinking it was outrageous. It’s actually kind of a messed up deal.

According to Pradia, Caldwell Jr. had been living in the Quad Apartment complex but was moved to a new apartment because of mold. The apartment complex houses students and non-students, and Caldwell Jr.’s new roommate was a non-student, who according to Pradia had previous run-ins with law enforcement. Caldwell Jr. contacted his father by phone on Oct. 9 to tell him his new roommate threatened him with a gun. His father called Laird, who responded he would move his son. Three days later Caldwell Sr. got a call from Laird telling him his son had been killed, Pradia said.

Yeah the few details I read in the threads about it here are wild af.
At first I didn't understand why they cancelled the season, etc.
It makes a lot more sense. The entire thing is a mess.

I'm not surprised.

I think the family has a case. Had him set up with a Non Student???? WTF???

Yeah, I hadn’t really kept up with it, but it makes a lot more sense about Laird resigning. I mean the guy was 21 years old and I’d like to think he should have been able to figure something out in the meantime until it could be settled, but he shouldn’t have been in that situation to begin with. I also have a hard time imagining letting my child be in that situation after being alerted to it. Again, no shouldn’t have been in the situation but zero critical thinking, initiative, or responsibility.

Would explain why coach resigned

His parents live out of state it’s not like they are a short ways away. His dad was going to drive over there within a couple days but inbetween those couple days his son got shot and killed

I work in Natchitoches and those apartments were built with intent for students to live off campus, even though it’s across the street from campus. I don’t know why non students are able to live there and much less student athletes to room with non students

Yeah….I get all that. I’d like to think that a 21 year old would have the wherewithal to find a place to crash until it was handled. I’d also like to think that a parent would be able to come up with something: call the police, put him up in a hotel, drop everything and go there when it wasn’t addressed immediately, etc. I’m not blaming them for the situation. I am saying that I’d like to think that people would be able to deal with it better than they did. I’m just not sure who’s going to be held responsible. I think the only possibility would be the company that operates the apartment complex, but only if they were aware of the situation.

So not only do they not house only athletes with athletes, they not only house athletes with students, but athletes with just some dude off the street?
This should get the AD fired and frick it…the university president fired too.
What kind of a complete piece of shite school is this?

quote:This is why more info is needed. An apartment complex can't just assign Caldwell or anyone in an apartment to stay with " Tyrone in 5c until your unit is repaired ". Maybe this was an acquaintance of Caldwell & he agreed to crash out with him until his apartment was fixed? Something went wrong & realized he made a terrible mistake .

How does that even work? I’d assume he was scholarship, but I might be wrong. Either way, a college kid that’s on scholarship or a kid that’s paying his or her way shouldn’t be put with a roommate that isn’t in school. This seems like a real deal lawsuit, the school put him in a dangerous situation, and unfortunately it cost him his life.

quote:They lived outside of Austin Texas it appears & probably just cant leave work mid week & called Coach to move him temporarily. They were going to Natchitoches that weekend, but got the call Thursday that he was dead. I'm not blaming NSU here yet , but the family feels a personal let down from the Coach.

There is a good chance Laird or his proxy sat across a table and told the boy's mother he would take care of him like his own.

I would have gotten the frick out of there the second it happened and stayed with a friend, slept in the woods. WHATEVER

It's so bizarre to me that schools arrange for students to live with total strangers in this day and age, be it a dorm, apartment, etc. Too many crazy people in the world. I could not sleep like that.

Somebody pulls a gun on my sim yeah I’m asking the coach to move him. I’m also telling my son to go see the coach to make sure that’s happening. Talk to my college advisor, calling the police, etc.

I hope NSU has to fold because of this. Setting up a student athlete in an apartment with a non student is against common sense and protocol at most major universities. Then for them to not immediately move him after the threat was reported, wtf? NSU seems to be liable to a large degree here.

And I’m on the road 14 hours if I have to to get my kid out of there.
