Fair counter for a job offer

I can talk salary with a bunch of Internet people that don't know me so here goes.
Received a job offer today that was lower than what I expected or would willingly accept. The offer was for 78k and I was hoping for 80 or above, hopefully closer to 85.
My current salary is around 72k and I'll be getting a small increase next month putting me around 75k. Leaving for 3k more isn't exactly what I wanted to do.
So first question, would it be fair to counter and say I wanted to be closer to 85k?
Second, what's the best way to go about this? Explain that my current salary will soon be close or just say I was hoping for 85k and see what happens?

Counter with 85. The worst they can say is no.

You can absolutely counter. If you want to be near 85, then tell them you were hoping for 88-89 range. (then shut up don't say anything else, less is more)

Don't say closer.

Just counter with 87k.

Yeah don't leave unless you hate your job or the new money is awesomely better. A 3k bump is nothing to switch jobs is nothing.

I hope you're single and under 25.

Are there more benefits with this company?

Why's that? What if he is married and his wife makes the same or more? Wouldn't that be better? Love fake OT rich guys.

You need to explain why you are worth the extra you are asking for; and you better delievered on it. If you can back it up, go for it. Additionally you can haggle over vacation/time off if money isn't on the table anymore.

Since you are in good standing with your current employer you've got the power in this negotiation. My counter would depend on my relationship with the potential new employer. If this is someone you have a personal relationship with I'd be very open and honest and give them the amount it would take for you to leave your current position.
If this is a company that you aren't concerned with the repercussions I'd tell them their offer isn't a significant difference from your current salary and to consider relocating/changing careers, you would expect a salary around $85k.

You can't support a family with only $72k/yr pre-tax.

I think I will say 85 and see what happens.
I don't think they will just take the offer off the table or anything, is what my concern is.
What is a reasonable time frame to counter? I just got the offer this morning.

This. Unless you hate your job or you are maxed out, you won't feel an extra 3k. Tell them you need 87k. If they want you, they will probably counter btw 82-84. Your choice to accept or try for 85 again..

Haha if you can't support a family on 72k then you're doing it wrong dude.
I have a wife and a kid. We save my wife's entire income and live off of mine. We're even building a house right now.
I really love the folks on this board who act like you need 200k to raise a family.
