I need assistance with deleting content from a cell... but not the whole cell.

For instance, one cell has "First Name, Last Name, Date, Time, Quarter"

And I want to delete everything but the "First Name, Last Name"

Is that possible? Can I "search" for data in the spreadsheet? for instance in terms of a boolean search, "delete all '*/*/*' and maybe 'Q*'"...

I know, I know, "Tech Board!"... but I have a deadline for COB today and need to exposure that only the OT can provide...

You could try to use data->text to columns.

Move everything but first name, last name to a new cell and then delete it.

Are all the cells cataloged the same way?

like date, time, and quarters have the same amount of numerals?

You can tell excel to remove so many character from the right of the cell.

If all your cells are formatted the same, then you can use this, no matter how long people's names are.

Or you can export your data to a txt file and insert dividers like tabs and semicolons manually, then import it into excel.

First search system 32 and delete that. Next, don't jerk around all day and maybe you could get your work done on time.

Serious answer.

Use Text to columns to get all the data in separate cells. ( LINK)

Delete the cells you don't need

You would have First Name, Last Name in two different columns, then you could combine those columns if you needed one. LINK

You could use text to columns and delimited option and pick comma as the separator and split that single column into multiple columns and delete the ones you don't need. Then merge the remaining columns. That will probably work.

ETA: I said the exact same thing as the guy above me...

With different lengths of names though that would have all different results though wouldn't it?

Yes, thats why you have to use Text to Columns

Watch for stragglers like First Name Last Name Jr. or III, but this should do the trick.

This....Once everything is in seperate columns, you can concatenate the two name columns into one.

I'm trying to do this and it's only capturing the first name... leaving the rest of the empty fields blank

Do what I said.

If your cells are all arranged the same way you can use a character code to remove all the uneeded characters to the right of the name.
