Not long ago you could go to rural, farm, or occasionally city personal prop or estate auctions and get awesome deals on damn near anything.

Now everything sells at auction for twice what it should because antique and furniture dealers don't know what they're doing. They're competing against each other driving up the prices of everything at auction hoping to be the next "American Picker". No wonder antique store prices are absurdly expensive. The owners purchase their stuff at twice the real value and must resell those items for twice the purchase price to profit.

That means if you purchase a quality item at an antique store or online you're probably paying 4 times its real value.

To find items for a great deal you damn near have to get lucky and fall upon someone's barn, make an offer on something, and hope the owner is in a selling mood.

frick American Pickers!

That's why I just rob old people after smearing mud on my face.

They sit in the folding chairs I leave them blaming "some Puerto Rican guy". That's if they remember that I robbed them anyway.

Antique auctions sell shite for extremely high prices. Go to garage sells.

I get that.

I'm just saying auctions used to be a wonderful treasure hunt where you could get a great deal on a quality item.

Not any more.

Came here to post this. Except the housing market has been crap long before Fixer Upper. In fact I'd say flipping houses was actually more popular 10 years ago. Fewer people are doing it now, just the ones that are do it full time and buy up all the properties.

Normally you're nuttier than squirrel turds but you actually got this right.

Went to several shop closure auctions around Lafayette that were open to the general public. Every a-hole in town was there convinced they were getting a steal of a deal.

Watched two schmucks bid the price of a very used plasma torch up to $300 above what a brand new one with a warranty would cost. We said 'frick it' and watched a few more lots get overpriced and then hauled arse back to work.

I've seen some people pay crazy prices for junk at auctions. I always hope they buy early and run out of money. That way they are out of the game for the things I'm looking to bid on.
