U.S. environmental regulators accused Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV of using software that allowed illegal emissions in diesel-powered vehicles, the latest broadside in an unprecedented government crackdown on auto makers for alleged pollution transgressions.
The Environmental Protection Agency, days before the end of the Obama administration, delivered a violation notice to Fiat Chrysler accusing the auto maker of using illegal software that allowed 104,000 recent diesel-powered Jeep Grand Cherokee sport utilities and Ram pickup trucks to spew toxic emissions beyond legal limits. The affected vehicles have model years ranging between 2014 and 2016.

On one hand, don't break the law.
On the other hand, the CAFE Standards are insane.

I like how Chrysler's response to the EPA is basically "we'll see what your replacements have to say about it".

Here's what I don't understand, are diesels not cleaner than gas already? I'm ignorant on this but they prefer diesels in Europe because my understanding is they are cleaner? Or is it just possible to make them cleaner?

I've got a buddy who had a diesel Passat that was part of the controversy. He is taking the money once they buy it back and purchasing another Passat. He loves that car.

CAFE standards are insane, and they are definitely why we are seeing cars with very expensive lightweight materials, small displacement turbo engines (that aren't more efficient than NA engines in real world conditions), 10 speed automatic transmissions, and start/stop technology that no one wants. All of that gets very expensive.
I don't think CAFE regs do anything for emissions though. Emissions are yet another way that our government makes new cars and trucks vastly more expensive and less fuel efficient.

I was under the impression emissions devices sap cars of precious MPGs. If that assumption is incorrect, I will admit I'm wrong with my premise.

We're trading in my wife's Sportwagen TDI for the Sportwagen Alltrack. They're great cars and our TDI used to get 50 mpg hwy, but the "fix" to the system would decrease that substantially. The Alltrack is just the car she has now without a diesel engine and with a little bit of a lift for more clearance, plus AWD.

I'm not sure what the timeline is, but he's supposedly getting back the value of the car when the story broke, which was a month after he purchased it.

They have none that they can sale, dealers still have 2015 models when the cheat was announced that are sitting on the lots over a year later...
