I have read countless debates that there is not an engineering shortage and that not every engineering field is a marketable. Some engineers struggle to find work and others do only to find it unsatisfying.

As someone almost finished with a Masters in Engineering, I am curious to know the truth.

I was under the impression that an engineering degree would be an instant hire, but now i assume that i was mistaken.

I am referring to the United States in general and not specifically Baton Rouge. I apologize for the lack of specificity.

Everyone who graduates with an engineering degree is hired immediately and is making 200k before they turn 30.

Probably in petroleum engineering. Saw it on Public Broadcasting.

ETA: sorry. That was petroleum engineering jobs, not shortage of the engineers.

There is a shortage of quality engineers i.e. people that are good at it and work hard. There are a number of them in the BR area and the big firms in town will pay them.

The others are fresh out of school kids with no experience or lazy fricks who just want to put in 40 and go home

Not all engineering degrees have the same level of demand in the marketplace.

Surely if you are a graduate student you realized this long ago.

You have a Masters in Engineering and yet the spelling and grammar of an inner-city high schooler.

Says a lot about Engineers these days.

Where'd you get your degree from?

I would say there is niether a shortage or an excess of engineers...in times of prosperity, there are more jobs than there are engineers and in times of a struggling economy (like now), some engineers can't find jobs...sounds like a well balanced system to me...

fact is, year over year, an engineering degree is a damn good degree to have...if you can make it through school and don't mind working hard, it will always provide a good living for you...

Dude, you're grammar sucks. If it's any indication on how you make first impressions during the interview process, you're in major trouble. Putting that SU "degree" to good use.

From a Chem-E....

I get how an exchanger works, but I am still amazed the two streams enter, mix, and then separate back out after the heat transfer.

Yep.

Lazy frickers. Why would anyone want to spend time at home with their families? What would be the point of that?

I'm an engineer, never had a problem finding a job. I'm looking for a good licensed engineer with experience leading bridge or road designs. Having a hell of a time finding one right now.

Why don't you give a rookie engineer a chance?

Employers will always claim there is a shortage. I experienced it in another field. Every single one of the big companies I dealt with always bitched about not having people to hire. Problem is that there were plenty of qualified people....they just wouldn't hire them.

I chewed a big wig out one day because I got tired of every GD company bitching, but none would accept anyone with less than 5 years experience for beginner positions.
