Not sure how to handle this one. I have lost a few dogs in my lifetime and it is a terrible experience, but this employee has a few deadlines due by Thursday and I don't think he will be able to meet the deadline if he sits out tomorrow.

I guess the thing that is kind of bothering me about it is that he has known that this day would be coming within the last few weeks.

It is indeed a touchy situation but I am not sure how to approach it because I really need him here tomorrow to work on these projects.

Has anyone been in a situation like this before?

Having lost a dog recently, I can tell you I would be immensely appreciative of the day off if I was that employee.

Give the SJW's a few years, and animal deaths will be grounds for FMLA leave.

No one in the world believes that it is humanly possible to have over 126,835 posts on a message board.

This. It's perfectly justified for your lettuce washer to miss the shift so he can mourn his dog.

Man up and be a team player--You can man the grill and wash lettuce for one shift.

Does he have time off? If so he should be able to use his days. It's not really your business why. I wouldn't do it.

I had to put my dog to sleep at 1AM one morning, went to bed at 2:30, got up at 5:00, drove to a city 2 hours away for a very important meeting with a client.

Honestly it was one of the hardest 24 hours of my life mentally, but when you have responsibilities sometimes you need to man up and take care of them.

You walked uphill in the snow while barefoot just to get to school too?

The only thing the guy did wrong was telling you why he's taking a day off. Rookie mistake.

Man, frick a dog. If he has kids that love the dog that he has to deal with, I can dig it. But all these people acting like a dog is a damn person need to come the frick on.

And I have a dog. It's a ducking dog, though.
