Hyperloop Transportation Technologies announced today that it has signed agreements to work with Oerlikon Leybold Vacuum and global engineering design firm Aecom. The two companies will lend their expertise in exchange for stock options in the company, joining the army of engineers from the likes of Boeing and SpaceX already lending their time to the effort.

“It’s a validation of the fact that our model works,” says Dirk Ahlborn, CEO of Hyperloop Transportation Technologies. “It’s the next step.”

The Hyperloop, detailed by SpaceX and Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk in a 57-page alpha white paper in August 2013, is a transportation network of above-ground tubes that could span hundreds of miles. With extremely low air pressure inside those tubes, capsules filled with people would zip through them at near supersonic speeds. Musk published the paper encouraging anyone interested to pursue the idea, since he’s kinda a busy guy.

Elon Musk is the type of genius and future thinking we need to push mankind forward.

The only issue with Musk is he overpromises and underdelivers. I'm not sure if he loses focus or if he's too ambitious, but his time horizons for things are way too aggressive.

Why waste any money on BR? A loop won't change how shitty it is. The harder for people that live there, to get out of town, the better.

What he delivers tends to be a lot more than what anyone else is doing though.

Over aggressive timelines for sure, but he still does some badass shite.

I think as he ages, he'll get more realistic with timelines. I just hope he doesn't lose his creativity.

This seems like a good place to post the Wait But Why posts on Musk:

It'll be a tie. Hyperloop will get scrapped due to lack of funding and concrete engineering data. BR loop will never get made because the city will grow too large for the funds that will be available.

On the topic of Elon Musk. Why is everyone on this dude's dick. From magazines to random jackasses on an airplane. It's like he's the greatest gift to science since Leonardo DiVinci. Dude made PayPal and an electric car. Big freaking deal. I can dream up a bunch of shite that'll give tech guys a boner too. Sorry to rant. I just think he's overrated and a lot of talk.

Let's be honest, humanity will accomplish lots of things before BR gets a loop. We'll be travelling around in fricking star ships and good old Baton Rouge will still have no loop.

It's a pretty ambitious development but this guy makes stuff happen. I'll be interested to see the engineering in a full size scale. Musk is a fricking genius and his pocket book shows it.

I like your spirit, son, but it's not a good trolling technique to just say things that are objectively false.

I think his over aggressive timelines don't factor in governmental interference. In his mind, these projects should only take as long as he promises. But assholes get in the way.

Awesome, Musk is one of my idols. Very innovative thinking is definitely what we need going forward in the future.

Elon Musk will have created faster than light space travel and figured out women before Baton Rouge gets a loop.
