My office is off of Florida Blvd and received 18 inches of water. In regards to height, the water went in between the first and second electrical outlets. Both outlets are still working fine. My monitor is plugged into a surge protector that is plugged into the bottom outlet (which was flooded) and is still working fine. Is there any risk to using the outlets more? I will be getting new computers and am wondering if it is ok to plug them in before we move in a few days. I would hate to fry the new computers from outlets that are partially fried themselves.

They should cut off breaker. Change the receptacle. Clean the wires in the back of the receptacle.

As and aside (but related).....From what I have heard, if you have any questions, do NOT call your utility provider and tell them you had water exposure because they will supposedly pull your meter and not give it back until it is inspected (which will take a while).

Stick a metal paperclip in an outlet to test it!

If they working, there was a good chance that the power went out before flooding and water dropped before power came on. That, or your breakers are screwed. They should of tripped.

Power down and replace the plugs.

Something tells me that my breakers are screwed. We only owned this building for 8 years but it is nearly 40 years old. What does it mean if my breakers are screwed? I obviously know nothing about electrical work. We are planning on getting the whole building gutted, I just need it to halfway function for 5 days.

If your outlets are wet than wiring is wet too. I think there is a city code to replace them.

Yep, I have the full intention of replacing them I just am curious as to how much I should use them before they are replaced. Can they ruin new computers or old printers that are still plugged into them and working?

As long as you are using your working surge protector you will not ruin the computers. You may burn the building down, but your computers won't short out... They would burn up in that scenario though... Can't win for losing

Use new surge protectors till you get things right.

At a minimum I would get new surge protectors.

I'd also likely replace the lower outlet boxes. if they got wet, they are going to be compromised. May take a day, week, year, but eventually I would think they would go.
