El Salvador rounds up worst 1% of population... murders drop 98%

The murder rate per 100,000 people peaked in 2015 at 106. In 2023 that had dropped to 2.4, a decrease of 98%.
By comparison, the murder rate in Jackson, Mississippi was about 90 last year after peaking at over 100 in 2021.
In the past two years the government has rounded up gang members en masse and held them without trial. And the prisons aren't even full yet.
Most of them will be there for life.
Basically if you have an MS-13 tattoo, you're in prison for the rest of your life. What a novel idea.

as part of the plan the government built what would be the world's biggest prison by population for 40,000 inmates. It at present houses 12,000 inmates

the crackdown has transformed life for Salvadoreans who can now move around freely in neighborhoods previously controlled by gangs

When you let crime get out of hand you almost need to sacrifice personal liberties to get ahold of it. Our politicians let that balance get out of hand and wonder why the pendulum has to swing that way

Sounds all fine and good until the government starts classifying certain political beliefs as gang/terrorists and throws them in jail without trial. This is why we can’t have nice things.

This is the unfortunate reality for our system in America. We know who the trouble makers are and if we did “round them all up”, a massive amount of problems would go away overnight.
The only problem with that is you’ve gone from the frying pan to the fire because in getting rid of the bad people, you’ve given tyrannical powers to the government to do it.

That’s the problem though. A temporary reduction in personal liberties to address an issue is like a temporary tax. Once it’s here, it never goes away.

I disagree. If we actually enforced the law and prevented repeat offenders of violent crime from getting out of jail over and over again (only to commit more crime), the change would be drastic. There's no need for tyranny to make this change.

We have already done that in our country. They might as well do something for us.

Even without going there the concept is diametrically opposed to the ideals of our Constitution.
Every right in the Constitution was paid for in blood and most of them cause more blood to be shed to hold onto them. There is a cost for freedom and it is often blood and not just the blood of military. Now this doesn't mean you can't do a better job at controlling crime within the framework of the Constitution but it will always be easier to control crime in a monarchy for example.

We should do that to our tattoo people here

He who sacrifices Liberty for Security, deserves neither.
That being said,
this is 100% correct.

I have stated it before.
It’s not 13% that commit 50% of all violent crimes.
It’s really like 1-1.5% (at most).

I fully trust El Salvatore’s government over any democrat in Washington.

I have an acquaintance that is a missionary to Haiti. It’s wild that the Dominican Republic can have a mostly functioning government and economy but Haiti cannot get their shite together. That’s by Clinton and Co. grifted down there.
They said the only way to fix the country is to get a benevolent dictator in power who will arrest everyone. Their final point was “they need somebody that is actually what Trump’s critics accuse him of being.”

Well there's a novel idea...lock up the bad guys and crime goes down? Wow. Who knew?

Straight out of Stalin's playbook. One of the first things he did was open the jails to create a sense of chaos and unease. He then promised to get the crime problem under control in exchange for a few personal freedoms. He used a problem he created to strip citizens of their rights. That sounds an awful lot like how things are playing out here.

I fully believe that yall believe Trump would be benevolent and support him as a dictator.

You mean like People that were at the Capitol on Jan 6th? We are not as free as some think. And….you simply cannot trust a politician in this country.

I didn’t say this. A bleeding heart liberal said it.
