shite is nuts. I got a coworker could only buy a 25 pack getting offered $25 per pair now. Bunch of assholes going to overwhelm the local infrastructure and going to make BR 5pm traffic look like an easy morning commute.

Who gives any F's about looking at the sun. The Earth and work doesn't stop for another eclipse.

All these hipster retards don't know that all you have to do is go to Harbor Freight to get some welding gear...

For direct observation, however, the DIY route isn’t an option. Regular ole Ray-Bans will not protect your peepers. Even welder’s glass is no good unless it’s at least shade 14 or darker, NASA says

Do people really not understand you can't look at the sun only wearing sunglasses?

People going nuts for them now, but they'll be tossed in the gutter one minute after the eclipse is over.

See, e.g., Mardi Gras beads.

Just sold 2 pair for $150 on eBay.

Some are selling for $995

This will only get worse the closer we get to Monday.

Whoa. Just checked craigslist. They're going for up to $300 in my area (average around $50). We picked ours up for $1 a pair two weeks ago. Thinking of selling them now.

Not only do you need shade 13 or higher, you need electric arc welding glasses as only they block UV light.

We sold 7,000 pair at work as part of our United Way fund drive. Probably could have sold another 1,000 easily.

I saw websites saying 14 or greater, too...but NASA is saying that 12 is actually the minimum.

quote:

Experts suggests that one widely available filter for safe solar viewing is welders glass of sufficiently high number. The only ones that are safe for direct viewing of the Sun with your eyes are those of Shade 12 or higher. These are much darker than the filters used for most kinds of welding. If you have an old welder's helmet around the house and are thinking of using it to view the Sun, make sure you know the filter's shade number. If it's less than 12 (and it probably is), don't even think about using it to look at the Sun. Many people find the Sun too bright even in a Shade 12 filter, and some find the Sun too dim in a Shade 14 filter — but Shade 13 filters are uncommon and can be hard to find.

I ordered some from Amazon a couple weeks ago. Earlier this week I received a credit for the glasses and was told not to send them back. Amazon said they couldn't verify whether they were legit or not. I can't see any light through them at all and they have that ISO logo, but I doubt I'll risk it.
