The Baton Rouge Area foundation reports good news for the EBR economy, but they bemoan the disparity in income between the various races.

quote:

The local economy is doing well and unemployment has declined, but income inequality is preventing some in East Baton Rouge Parish from sharing in the prosperity, according to the Baton Rouge Area Foundation’s new CityStats survey.

East Baton Rouge added more than 5,843 jobs in 2015 to bring the parish’s total workforce to 226,426. The unemployment rate also decreased from 5.8% in 2014 to 5.4% in 2015. Income inequality, however, remains a persistent issue along racial lines, the report says.

However, it is interesting to see that white income fell(2%) as did Asian income(12%) while black and hispanic income was flat.

quote:

Meanwhile, median household incomes on average in the city-parish were flat between 2013 and 2014, at $63,558, according to U.S. Census Bureau statistics. White households saw their median income fall 2% over that span, but were still much higher than minority households, at $88,901. Median Hispanic household income was flat at $51,404, while Asian households fell by 12% to $51,404 and black households were flat at $41,029.

Does the fact that black income and Hispanic incomes stayed level while white income fell during a time of economic prosperity mean we are solving the problem and the gap is lessening? Or is it bad that in a time of prosperity the black and Hispanic income stayed flat while whites and Asians had theirs drop?

BRAF also studied other areas of interest (theirs) and they have a nice report of what they found.

White income matters.

Why is the infrastructure always decrepit and destroyed in black-only communities?

Country-wide?

Does anyone have an answer?

It means government benefits don't drop while white folk struggle to make ends meet.

I watched a crew of three Hispanics framing a house. They worked from sun up to sun down at a steady pace. If they are paid market value then they are doing pretty well.

I admire their work ethic and their work looks pretty good.

I see new concrete streets in EBR all the time. The poorer neighborhoods get federal dollars to rebuild.

Now many of the private properties look like crap. They are run down, weeds growing up in the yards, etc. Not all of course, maybe every third one or so. But many don't keep up the property they have.

Many do and you can see their work pays off.

watching an all hispanic crew framing is quite impressive. those guys will put a nail through their thumb, pull it out, and continue working like nothing even happened

For every dollar earned by a white household in 2014, Asian households earned 65 cents; Hispanic households earned 57 cents; and black households earned 46 cents, the report says.

just using blind stats like this doesn't serve much of a purpose. Show me how people in similar fields are being paid and that will tell us more.

If only more people would understand this.

Total average income stats are pretty much meaningless unless you are someone with an agenda

"Just using blind stats like this" serves BRAF's purpose of crying RACISM like it is currently popular to do. No one would blink if they printed "white households with two college graduates in professional corporate jobs are averaging $80k a year whereas a non white household with a single parent in a non skilled hourly position is earning less." Not trying to stereotype but their stats mean jack and shite without context. Why would they even release stats and cry racial economic disparity if they didn't have an agenda?

I agree. I chuckled when I read blacks/Hispanics median incomes were level while whites and Asians fell.

Shouldn't BRAF see that as good news? After all the income gap lessened, right?

ETA- BRAF is also pushing a tax to dredge the lakes-
quote:

Also, 53% say they would support a one-time property tax to improve the LSU lakes,

I wonder if 53% would say yes if the question was put in contect.

Say would you consider paying a property tax to dredge the lakes, another for council of aging, a new tax for a tram from LSU to Downtown and back, and another for a new roads plan?

I ask this because all these people have grand schemes to make EBR better and with the state hammering us and with BREC, the Library system and others maxing things out, can we do it all?

Probably has something to do with the amount of property tax and sales tax collected in the areas.

Asians make way more money than what's shown. Especially, since IBM is in BR now. Those facts are skewed.
